Abbey was rumoured to be to Forest, to then be loaned out to Olympiacos. May be impacted by the current situation at Nottingham though.

I wonder if he'll be sold to Olympiacos instead of Forest, with Forest being easily able to sign him from them at a future date.

No idea how reputable this account is, but it's reporting £300k as a combined fee. Which should cover us for 2 months at most? So bad it almost feels vindictive.

The post appears to have been deleted.

If it is £300k for both then that's disappointing, but hopefully we'll have a sell on clause for both of them. If that figures is true, it just shows how desperate the club is for money right now.

Unfortunately a sell on clause is pointless if we don't have a club to support. Heard we're only accepting cash up front for player sales apparently so doubt that anyone going would have a sell on clause

Clubs will always prefer cash up front for academy players as it is pure profit, but will in the case of academy products insert a sell on clause and sometimes a prefered bidder buy back clause which is how we got Savage.
The buying club gets the player now for a better price by agreeing to these clauses.
In the case of Holmes and possibly Abbey a loan back for the season would also possibly lower the buying price.

Not sure up front cash is always better, it depends upon circumstances. Imagine we'd been in a position to negotiate properly for Olise, you'd happily forego £5m up front for a 25% sell on clause when his next transfer could be for £60m - £80m.

Obviously we need cash desperately. But don't be surprised if Abbey does well for Luton in the Championship and goes for £25m in a few years. We'll be bemoaning the lack of sell on, as with Olise.

Which was always my gripe with the Olise situation and even Richards to an extent. When you see the figures that some Championship players move for to PL clubs and you see what we got, and what we missed out on, in a situation where we were better run we could have easily seen ourselves pocket far more than what we did.

People rightly/wrongly point to the release clause with Olise, which we may not have been able to influence that much, but we could have offered a mid-season contract that included a higher release clause. If he rejected that and we did lose him for what we did, at least we can say we did what we could to try and get the best possible price for him. It's more the principle that we haven't been in any position in the last few windows to negotiate on our better players. Even when we were though, we turned it down anyway e.g. Moore and Swift.

Dai almost certainly won't be going for sell on clauses because if he stays the club ceases to exist and if he goes the money doesn’t go to him.

I hope the 300K is not correct as that would be outrageous. Mind you bearing in mind his track record, it would be no surprise if Dai accepted a bag of magic beans for Holmes and Abbey.

Stranded
6ft Kerplunk Still seems bizarre that a player who has struggled to get into a League 1 team this year is heading to the Premier League (if only for a few months). What are the Luton fans saying?

Well, he is coming straight back here so he won't likely ever play in the PL. He's still what, 23, and with a decent level of apps at Champ level behind him. If/when they go down, he will likely be an integral part of the squad/team and young enough that if he does well could see his value increase or be good enough for the PL in 2 or 3 years time, should then return.

Yeh crazy to think he's only 23. Feels like he should be 28/29.

If/when this happens, how do you think it'll be communicated? I'm going for Luton Town statement, player messages on social media and then a 2 sentence statement by Reading FC 48 hours later.

Reading FC might be too scared to say anything. They’ll probably pretend they’re still at the club, but unable to play.

Just to confirm this relates to Holmes only, at this stage.

I'm not too upset by this one with the loan back. It's the Abbey announcement I'm dreading. Suspect he'll only make it at Luton if they get relegated, which is not a given if Forest get deducted points.

If there is a positive there, it is that Holmes stays with us until the summer, when he may well have moved on anyway - and we get some money now - have seen fees ranging from 300k to 1m - if its the latter, then thats not a bad deal in the circumstances, esp if the cash comes into the club (and only the club).

Abbey has apparently turned down Luton. If he stays long term, build him a statue. Port Vale fans can pay.
