Summer Sales

by SWLR » 16 May 2007 13:41

We are bound to be tested with bids for both Doyle and Shorey. Everyman has his price, if you were Mr Mad, at what price would you sanction a deal:

I'll start the bidding:

Doyle: £12M
Shorey: £4M

We are not so desperate to sell as we are not a selling club. So whatever the offer is, I'd imagine that Reading will not sell certain players.

Indeed. And how much they are offering.

If say, Liverpool or Man U came in with say a £12m bid for Doyle or a £6m bid for Shorey - I'd sadly say that they would move on.

Are you saying that they'd tap the player up?

Would the players want to go though if we did receive any offers...

They have both signed new deals and seem more than happy with the progression the club has made in the last couple of years...

TBH the group of players we have does contain a fair few 'settled' lads who seem content with the challenge Reading offers...I think wherever Sidders ends up..if he's not playing regularly may set a benchmark for the likes of Shorey and Doyle in terms of the grass isn't always greener..

Not to say that at the end of next season players won't move on...but as it stands I can only see a few of the fringe players wanting to move..

I think a combined bid of £40-45 million should do the trick

seriously Doyle is not £15m sort of stuff

Yes.

Can you seriously imagine Shorey turning down the chance to play in the Champions league under Wenger, Rafa or Fergie? Not to mention the chance to probably double their money.

As much as they enjoy it here now, I think they'd be mad to turn down a opportunity like that.

1. We're not a selling club
2. I'd want over £15 million for Doyle or Shorey, probably a lot more.

With (supposedly) £50m odd coming in for each premiership season, why would we risk our slice of the pie by selling two of our better players, even for a combined £20m? It's not easy to find replacements for their level of talent for a club like us, and then you have all the extra problems of settling new players in etc.

Surely the real issue is, if and when bids come in, do players like Shorey and Doyle want to stay at the club or jump ship? It's only when we have wantaway players that selling becomes at all in our interests.

Don't ferget that the extra money coming in will push prices up, so I'd expect prices to be 10 or 20% higher than this season - and if Ashley Young is worth £9.75M then Doyle is worth double that.

A left back on the fringe of the England team under the age of 28 is a very rare commodity, minimum price to anyone is £8 million.

As for Doyle, he is still somewhat unproven seeing as this was only his second season in England. I'd imagine that you would be talking £8-10 million

at this present time i think that if either player made it clear they wanted to go we would get

9 mil for doyle

6-7 mil for shorey

hopefully neither of them want to leave, it would take a top 4 team im sure

Well if they want to jump ship they'll have to put up with Woodcote Royal launching a stream of invective their way. Surely that's enough to stop any player leaving?

Shorey will not end up at one of the top 4 this summer....

Teams like that look abroad for proven international players...until Shorey breaks into the full England squad..he will be off the radar...that's how football is...he might be consistent and can play to a high standard...but he's not big enough just yet...

Why spend £5m on him when you could waste £8m on some carlos kickaball who has played at least 20times for his national team...

Can't see him going...

If a seriously big offer came in for any of our players from a big club, then we could end up losing the player. Every player has their price and if the player makes it clean he wants to go, the club may take the view that it is better to let him go, and not risk an unhappy player who underperforms e.g Nigel Reo Coker.

Most likely sale will be Sam Sodje to WBA for around £500K, but I won't lose any sleep over that.

Of course we wouldn't want to sell but there are certain deals that may come about that are almost impossible to stop. For example, Carrick - Spurs didn't really want to sell but Man U wanted there man and finally got him.

If one of the big clubs wanted say Doyle or Shorey it would soon become very difficult for us to resist the move.
