The best football comeback of all time?

by Loafer » 19 May 2023 09:17

Was Sheff Weds coming from 4 down last night the best ever?

Think it was incredible to watch that game, imaging being in the ground.

Nothing tops United v Bayern for me, but remember a few crackers in the CL in the last 10 years (Liverpool V Barca/Ajax V Spurs/Dortmund V Malaga and Barca V PSG)

Although the Angola 4-4 Mali game was something else, 4 down with 10 minutes left and they clawed it back

There was Liverpool v Dortmund too, in the CL QFs in 2016. Back when away goals were still a thing, Liverpool were 2-4 behind on aggregate with 24 minutes left, needing three goals to avoid being knocked out.

Peterborough's players must be totally shell-shocked today.

It appears that you can say you remember that one.

For the drama and the hat-trick, I actually think I enjoyed watching Spurs comeback against Ajax the most of all of them. Spurs weren't just 3-0 down on aggregate, they hadn't really been in the tie, and were away from home. And then, Lucas Moura.

I say I do not remember it as I only remember that 1 specific goal or part of it and nothing else

Won’t fall under the best but one of my favourite comebacks was Netherlands Czech Republic Euro 2004. Both teams played some great football that night and that Czech team somehow pulled it out. This is a good article on it;

City beating Spurs in the FA Cup from 3-0 down at half-time, and having had Anelka limp off, and Barton sent off, was quite something.

Former colleague of mine is a London based City fan who had flown back from the African Nations Cup that day and had a ticket for the game but decided against attending :)

Same date 28 years later and the greatest Reading comeback I have ever witnessed. Down 0-3 with 25 minutes to go against a team second in the table and on an unbeaten 14-match run. After Kevin Bremner was switched to up front, the last 30 minutes was like the Alamo. Genuine limbs on the Tilehurst and South Bank when he scored the winner.

Saturday 21st December 1985

Reading (0) 4
Horrix (65, pen.), Senior (79, 80), Bremner (83)
Plymouth Argyle (2) 3
Hodges (10), S. Cooper (44, pen.), Clayton (48)

Reading: Westwood, Peters, Bailie, Beavon, Hicks, Wood, Rogers, Horrix, Senior, Bremner, Gilkes (Burvill 51)
Plymouth: Crudgington, Nisbet, L. Cooper, Goodyear, McElhinney, Summerfield, Hodges, Coughlin, S. Cooper, Clayton, Nelson. Sub: Rowbotham
