Speculation: McFadden

by Doyler » 25 Dec 2007 17:29

From BBC Sport:
Celtic fail in McFadden loan move
Everton have rejected approaches from Celtic and Marseille to sign Scotland striker James McFadden on loan.
The 24-year-old's future at Everton is uncertain and he has admitted he would consider a return to Scotland.

Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told BBC Sport: "We have rejected Celtic's offer out of hand and we have left it at that.

"We are not actively trying to sell him, but there has been a lot of interest, not just from Celtic."

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan was tight-lipped on any possible move, saying: "January is when the cards are on the table and we will see what happens then."

Everton signed McFadden from Motherwell in a £1.25m deal in September 2003, but he has never been a regular under manager David Moyes.

He has started only three games this season, despite being one of the stars of Scotland's excellent, but ultimately unsuccessful, attemp to qualify for Euro 2008.

Wyness added: "We are in the Carling Cup semi-finals, the last 32 of the Uefa Cup and still have the FA Cup to come.

"We also have Premiership commitments, so we need all our top players around."

Everton have always insisted they will not sell McFadden, but he said: "I'd love to play in the Premiership.
"But, if it is not going to happen or if a chance to go back up to Scotland came in and I felt it was right, I'd do it."

McFadden has a year and half to run on his current deal at Goodison Park, but that has not stopped rumours that he will the subject of much interest in the January transfer window.

And a move back to Scotland would appeal to the international, who added: "Obviously it would be nice to be back with my family and back playing football again.

"But, until that chance comes, it is quite hard to answer that question. Hopefully it will happen one day, but I will wait and see."

McFadden's agent, Willie McKay, thinks a move away from Goodison is still a possibility in January as the player wants guaranteed first-team football.

Everton are looking to offer the striker a contract extension, but McFadden said: "The club have made it clear that they want to offer me a contract.

"But I have not gone down that road yet because I want to try to get into the team before I start talking about contracts."

Maybe everton could be tempted by a swap deal involving lita? Very good player and he would definitely be just as good if not better that what we have.

Yes please.

He's sounded out a move north of the border and I'm not sure Reading would be attractive enough for him but I'd love to see him here if it were possible.

I'd quite like Arteta and Cahill as well but that's not going to happen in a million years either.

Those two would be worth much more than McFadden, it would be realistic to think that we could sign McFadden for around £4 or 5m.

Why? He wants to go back to Scotland not further south. If Celtic are after him we have no chance.

Strikers arn't a priority right now either, though aother good one would be nice.

If the club aren't just talking nonsense about there being a 'warchest' available, we could offer more than that and it'd be worthwhile too.

Unfortunatley J McFadden would never want to come here. He would be good enough for a top 8 prem club (at least). Geography is an issue aswell he has always played for Northen clubs.

Why would we need a Left winger / Striker when we have Convey, Hunt and the 4 strikers. A player in his position is not a priority.

on another thread Coppelled Streets Not a chance, and at £5m I still don't see us spending that on one player.
There may have been press reports about us offering that amount before, but it's easy to say than do. I just can't see it yet.

Is there really that much difference between the two figures?

It said on setanta sports news this morning that birmingham have had a bid accepted. I think we could compete on the transfer fee, but I suspect birmingham would offer higher wages than us.

Possibly the lure of working with Big Eck again would sway it in Brums favor as well, thats even if we were interested in him.

I doubt Steve Coppell would be looking at Mcfadden but I would think hes certainly worth more that the 3.5 million that has been mentioned..

He would fit in perfectly.

To compeate we are going to have to raise our wage cap tho which i doubt will ever happen

Really? It seems the pulling power of Big Eck at Birmingham might be enough to tempt him. Birmingham had a £3 million pound offer rejected but are going back in with a higher bid. Now this is the sort of player that would sound out our intentions in this league but unfortunately the lure of Celtic or Birmingham with a Scottish manager will probably win the day. Can we not mention that Burns used to manage us, I'm sure that would sway him

It seems he may be willing to a lower placed team. But I still think similar to Matt Taylor why should we look at Left wingers. Hunts been arguably our best player this season. Convey is another specialist in this position. We dont want to overbalance our squad.

he's going to bham for around £5.5 mill. Think he's a quality player but cant see us splashing out that sort of money

From what I have seen of Mac the Fad he has played anywhere across the midfield and up front. He is easily better than Convey and would certainly be a better option. The whole point is to improve the quality of the squad, McFadden would definitely do that

Exactly, but if we were serious about progressing, this is the sort of player we need.

The RTG's Yeah but we've bid £5m before..... Yeah, YEAH!!!!

So we were led to believe...
