October 2006
By Hugh Spalding
Here's how it came about:
In April 2006, myself and my son Alex watched Reading thrash Derby. At some point in the game, the idea for ‘a song for all Reading fans' came to me. Reading had been cooking up a storm all season and the way that Mr Coppell had built the team ethic, they could do the same in the Premiership.
The idea was always for the song to be for everybody of all ages - it didn't matter whether they were five or fifty five, or whether they were male or female. It is a pop song for Reading fans. It is for families to play in the car, as well as for fans to sing in the stadium. Maybe people will prefer Kingsley's mix which is a bit rockier - who knows.
It took six and a half months to go from ‘germ of an idea' to a radio-standard CD for sale in the shops. It involved four songwriters, eight children, one scout hut, six musicians, one patient wife, 32 hours of recording, four sponsors and a separate bank account**. We are able to use the Reading107FM logo as the song is released with their support.
If you are interested, there's more information about the musicians, the story behind the song and a whole load of ‘Thank you's' on the following web site:

** By the way, it's not intended to make us loads of money. We produced it as ‘a song for all Reading fans', not as ‘a song to make loads of money'. We spent quite a lot on a professional recording, so if we sell all 1000 copies, we will make maybe a couple of hundred pounds. If we make this profit, there will be discretionary payments to California FC and to 1st Wokingham Scouts for their help on the project.
* who am I? A local dad who still plays football but I come from the North of England ...!! I am involved with running youth teams at California FC in Wokingham/ Finchampstead. Three of the songwriters (there were four of us) and the guitarist (Martin) are season-ticket holders.
