Jews and Sikhs, on the other hand, are allowed to intermarry with each other provided both parties agree to wear scottish kilts at the ceremony and forbear from using the word "nuance" in mixed company. Isn't it wonderful when they use that little sikh knife to cut off that little Jewish ...

Isn't Sarkozy half Jewish and half Portugese or something ? Peter Hain is South African. Although by 'non European' did you mean black ? The USA has had black non Americans in high office (Colin Powell), although IIRC he wasn't elected, he was appointed Yes, black or North African/Arab. Colin Powel...

I always caught quite a lot of stick from my Continental friends back in the 70s and 80s about "racist America", but honestly, having travelled extensively across Europe for the past twenty years - other than England - I'm amazed at how much more ingrained racism is in Europe.

Their background can be British, I was just curious as to how ready Europeans are to accept Persons of Color at a high level of government. I wasn't surprised to know that England has some. Would be more surprised to see Germany or France achieve that.

As long as we're completely off football and onto politics and the politics of race: does any European country have an elected official who is of non-european background, higher, say than a member of parliament?

Just curious

The view from television: though glad Reading got the points, still: an eleven man Reading had trouble maintaining possession against a ten man Fulham. Wanted to see a nice passing game with opportunities created, etc. Instead watched a ten man Fulham own possession and Reading scramble to counter-a...

[quote="Seal"]Friend of mine used to be a coach in the US and is now a sports journalist and knows a lot about US soccer (he's interviewed, Bobby, Marcus and Coppell). He said the following about Eddie Johnson: "Yes he is good. Knows how to create space for himself. And is comfortable...

another report on the story http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=392376&cc=5739 Having read through some MLS & Kansas City Wizards websites I can't help but notice that Johnsons 'attitide', 'ego' and 'poor work ethic' coming up time & time again. Although I don't know the man pers...

My typically arrogant American Reply: One of the things that makes Johnson a headcase - lately - would make any one of us headcases: being sent from a contending team (FC Dallas) to the windy, empty NFL cavern at Kansas City. A player of excellent caliber, excellent potential. Given Coppell's abili...

No doubt, no doubt - but if you're a professional footballer of at such a young age, it's because you are absolutely driven and competititve. Forersight is the province of the older, wiser player. I'm neither condoning nor condemning.

No professional athlete wants to sit and possibly have his position usurped by the performance of a subtitute. After Hunt played so well in the Chelsea game, people were already saying he should start over Bobby against Arse. Most of these guys feel the pressure to perform or get relegated to the be...

Thought overall the team played extremely well - definitely looked like a Prem. side. But here's my thing: I am no Convey apologist in any sense of the word, but it does seem that the ball only goes right. Not that Seol isn't a dangerous man on attack, etc. But I thought one of the things that made ...
