Re: Ex Players

Halford hardly left the centre circle apart from going up to take his pen. Played like Alan Hansen in his prime and hardly broke in to a jog at any time. Went off with an injury towards the end and left with a strapped up knee but possibly just a sign of a twenty year career...

Re: Ex Players

Went to watch Hungerford vs Billericay on Saturday. Two ex-Royals in the Billericay line-up - Simon Cox was coach and an unused sub and Greg Halford was at centre back (and scored a penalty). I was never quite sure why Halford's stay at Reading was so brief, although have heard lots of rumours! He w...

Re: Exeter away August 1990

I remember coming away from St James Park after that opening day 3-1 win in 1990 thinking we were going to win the league. We had three £250,000 strikers all scoring and it looked like it was going to be our year.
Finished 15th as I recall......

Re: Players who virtually won us games/promotion/avoided relegation on their own

Nicky Forster played as a lone striker for a couple of seasons under Pardew and then Coppell around '03-'05 and seemed to beat teams single handedly. He was so fast the only way to stop him was to bring him down. I remember brilliant hat-tricks against Preston and Ipswich at the Mad Stad when he was...

Re: Worst ever Reading FC X1

Michael Meaker is the worst player I've ever seen in a Reading shirt. A winger that could neither beat a man or cross a ball! Made worse by the fact that he was the makeweight in the Simon Osborn transfer too. With him out on the wing and Carl Asaba in the middle it's no wonder we went down. Dark da...

Re: Ex Players

Glenn Little seems to be enjoying his retirement. He was on top form at the ex-player's Q & A in Tilehurst last night. He spoke very fondly of Steve Coppell and the 106 squad but admitted he should never have returned half fit in 2009. He was player manager at Gray Athletic until recently and pl...

Re: John Docherty

John Docherty is a member at Ogbourne Downs Golf Club near Marlborough in Wiltshire and is an annoying, arrogant know-it-all idiot.
To listen to him, you'd think his managerial career rivalled Shankly, Paisley and Clough....

He's a rubbish golfer too.

Re: Best loan signing

George Shipley back end of '78-'79 deserves a mention. Never on the losing side for Reading and never even conceded a goal during his loan spell.

How about:
Danny Bailey (poor man's Terry Hurlock)
Joe Gamble (the new Roy Keane!)

Spotted!

I just narrowly avoided running Jerry Williams over in Witney High Street.
He moved a lot faster than I ever saw him do in a Reading shirt!!

Re: BFTG Newcastle (H)

I have to agree with oh ROAR's comment about our centre backs last night. With Moore off the pitch my heart sank when I saw Dwight Gayle coming on but McShane & VDB had him in their pockets and he hardly got a touch. Their positional play and interceptions were brilliant and after Murphy's heade...

John Swift

Didn't notice anyone complaining about John Swift celebrating after scoring against a club he was previously on loan at but when Jamie Mackie did the same after scoring against us for QPR he got hammered.
I guess it's different if you score for Reading rather than against.

Double standards??

Aye, several big games in a Royals shirt but only fleeting appearances in the cups and Premier League bench warming since he left.

Ben Hamer

I see Ben Hamer played in goal for Leicester against Porto in the Champions last night and despite letting five in did pretty well. Does that somehow make him the most successful of all the young goalkeeping prospects we've sold on over the years; Ashdown, Young, McCarthy, Andersson, even Federici??...

Re: 1993-1995 vs 2005-2007

The style of football McGhee got them playing evolved over a couple of seasons and it was the first time we'd ever had any sort of media attention apart from a couple of record breaking moments under Ian Branfoot. The 106 season came from nowhere, everyone just clicked and I'd say that at least half...

Re: Reading's most unsung hero

Have to agree with you there CC. Mick Gooding could grab a match by the scruff of the neck and totally dictate the play which he did so often and successfully under Porterfield and McGhee. The only other players I've seen do that in my time are Simon Osborn and to a lesser extent Peter Grant. In the...

Oops. Good point well put.
Gary Crosby was an inept right winger for Forest wasn't he.
