Reading vs Bedford Town - FA CUP 1956/57 -

by andy30766 » 06 Nov 2006 18:43

Hi

Can anyone help me out with any info from the above game.....

My dad is convinced his Dad was the referee that day, that it was recorded for TV.

I think the royals won 1-0, if anyone can fill me in on any details please let me know.

I tried to buy the programme on ebay but got outbid at £15.

If anyone has one they would like to sell (assume dad is right) I would like to buy it for him as a retirement gift.

Any info gratefully accepted.

Andy

Why is Iain Dowie on the front of a mid-50's RFC programme? :?

Reading won 1-0, att 22,895, very close game.

Don't think it was on TV - possible confusion with tie v Wisbech a year later which was.

Bedford Town were a very good non-league side in the 50s. They accounted for many league sides esp. in 55/56 when they drew 2-2 at Highbury then led Arsenal in the replay 1-0 until 4 minutes from time when they conceded an equaliser and lost 2-1 in extra time. Apparently they also had 2 goals disallowed in that replay.

So when they came to Reading a year later they were probably highly fancied to beat us esp. as they had won 4-2 at Norwich in the 1st Round! I know there is a small amount of information on the game in the Biscuits and Royals book that David Downs wrote - there's even a replication of the cartoon strip (by Areff) that appeared regularly in the local press of the era.

Strangely I think Bedford are currently managed by one time Reading loanee Nicky Platnaur.

Presumably none of this really helps in your quest. Would suggest the best move is therefore to call the Reading Chronicle to see what archives they have from that time (don't think the EP started until the 60s but you could try them as well in case they had a precursor title in opration then).

Nicky Platnauer does indeed manage Bedford Town. I discovered this whilst reading a local paper from Kempston and thought his name rung a bell...

While we're on the subject, does anyone have a programme from THAT Bristol Rovers match in 99? it was my first RFC game and we broke down on the way so we didnt have time to buy a programme.

Many thanks

Was it the 6-0 defeat? Just realised that the home 6-0 defeat probably happened in 1998, and the home game of the 98/99 had Martin Allen hiding from the referee to avoid getting sent into the home stands after having a barney with Ian Holloway. Think we won 2-0.

The 6-0 was Jan 99. I still have the ticket

Yipeeeee

E T Meaden of Trowbridge was my grandad - so he did referee the game, thats one family question settled. Now to find out if there are any moving pictures of the game. If anyone from the Reading papers reads this I would love a copy of the Match Report.

If anyone can email me jpegs of the programme I would appreciate it.

ampcfootball@hotmail.com

I know one went on ebay for £20 not so long ago.

Incidentally my grandad was on the football League from 1947-59, if anyone else sees his name in the middle home or away please let me know.

considering I am a referee and West Ham fan you have all been really helpful... it really is appreciated, thank you

But then I live with the Worlds most kind and loving Reading fan so i'm not surprised.

:D
