papereyes I thought the one vs one he stopped from Ronaldo was absolutely superb.

and as the commentator said, Schmeichel-esque

IIRC, the Schmeichel-esque praise was aimed at Kuszczak (sp) for his distribution in the buildup rather than at Federici's save.

I made that mistake too.

Volvicanus He'd be my first goalie choice at this point. Excellent game.

This game made a believer out of me. I now declare my confindence in Federici. Great game.

Ashdown and Hahnemann were never told who would be Number 1, but given Ashdown's impressive form during that 12-13 game run and Hahnemann's poor form at the time, it wouldn't have surprised me in the slightest had Ashdown started the season.

Back to Federici, fantastic performance and his saves from Ronaldo/Larsson but I would still keep Hahnemann as Number 1 for the league matches.

At the current progress rate of Federici however, he is surely looking as the safe bet to replace Hahnemann long term and it was a great compliment by SC yesterday to describe him as potentially Australia's next Number 1 after Schwarzer.

Most definitely, he stayed on his feet as long as possible in front of Ronaldo making himself very big. Great little flick of his boot to nudge it past the post. I was also very impressed with his kicking, always stayed in touch even on back passes and huge distance to boot.

The Australian
Federici will be next Socceroo goalkeeper, says Reading coach

YOUNG SOCCEROOS goalkeeper Adam Federici was the toast of Berkshire as Reading held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup fifth round at Old Trafford yesterday (AEDT).

The little-known Federici, from Huskisson, on NSW's south coast, pulled off some impressive saves and will cherish his diving block to a Henrik Larsson shot that looked set to give United a last-gasp winner. Instead, both teams travel to Berkshire for a replay, with Reading buoyed by its last 20 minutes at Old Trafford when it gave as good as it got and looked like causing a boilover.

Royals boss Steve Coppell predicted a big future for Federici, who was earlier called into the Socceroos' train-on squad for the international friendly against Denmark at Loftus Road. "He is Australia's next goalkeeper. He is a big unit ... to get around and he is a good goalkeeper, who has grown in stature week by week," Coppell said. "He is ambitious, determined and he is a Trojan on the training ground, like lots of goalkeepers. "After an occasion like this, he'll be very proud and his family in Australia will also be proud."

The 17 Bus Federici is going to be pushing Marcus very hard for that jersey, and lets hope this time we do not allow a excellent prospect to leave like Ashdown.

Err, Ashdown chose to leave as he received a better contract offer from Pompey. Premiership or 2nd division football?

I thought it was common knowledge that Ashdown was told that despite his excellent form when Marcus was out that he would not be in the starting 11 at the start of the following season.

As far as I was aware he was rightly told he wouldn't be guarunteed being first choice. He would have had to earn the position on merit in training.

He did earn the right with the performances he'd put in at the end of the season. If he'd have stayed he would've been first choice.

Nope, definately the save. They were referring to the way he stayed on his feet and made himself big.

Sorry to upset you here, but I too thought that was what they were referring to until I heard it repeated on MOD on Sat night and Sun morning. They were very definitely referring to the long throw when using the Schmeichel comment.

We did, he ended up at Maidenhead I believe. He only came back on a short term deal to cover as we had injuries - and clearly impressed enough to still be here.
