WE are making history - lets monument it...

by gn1982 » 29 Mar 2007 21:20

Stevie Coppell's magic, he wears a magic hat...

Other clubs have golden cockerals, famous clocks, statues of famous managers adorning their stadiums to celebrate the great times. We are in the midst of some great times and i think we need to record it in a manner that is better than paying £100 odd for a bunch of bricks.

Lets be honest, our stadium is, pretty special but it doesn't exactly have a great deal of character. It doesn't have those little things you look at and wonder how or why it was placed there. Lets be honest at the moment we we are watching our greatest ever team. Lets celebrate them.

Our manager is responsible for almost all (John Mad has the stadium named after him) of the exceptionally amazing times we have had recently - and are still enjoying. Lets have a statue outside the ground of Sir Steve with at the very least the names of every player who has ever played for Steve at RFC.

Big brass or gold structure would be magnificent, i'm sure Steve would be a little coy about the whole situation but sod it - he is already a legend. It might even make him smile and sign an extra long contract... we would obviously need a lot of space on the bottom of the statue to record the names of the players of the next 3 generations.

What do you think...? If there are any metal workers out there who would like to estimate how much it would cost i'm sure we'd all be interested. With at least 22,000 RFC fans in the ground each week if everyone donated a quid i'm sure it would go some way towards achieving the goal of monumenting our history...

That's incredible - it's so huge I can't even see the people strolling in the park at the foot of the statue.

Do you think it's appropriate for a monument at a British sports ground ?

Probably best you wait until you've got some history worth celebrating.

Just as appropriate as singing "USA" to Marcus Hahnemann.

I was waiting for that :D

I don't sing USA.

Maybe we should have a korean monument, an irish monument, an icelandic monument, an australian monument, etc.
My point being that players are transient, the club is permanent. The club is British, so if a flag is needed at all, it should be a British or English flag.

I reckon that's about £22,000 - which might get you one of these bad boys:

I think it cost something like £100,000 - half of which was raised by the fans. I'm sure they'd be delighted to get something back on it. Maybe if we shaved the hair off...

I 'd agree that having more 'features' would be good.

I doubt Coppell would agree to a statue - and also don;t think it would be appropriate yet.

As for cost - well the Ted Bates one was reported as £100,000 so there is zero chance of fans raising anythng close to that. You might get £10,000 if you worked really hard but I doubt it.

More realistic would be a plaque (like the Maurice Evans memorial).

I have always thought the tunnell leading to Main Reception would be an ideal place to develop a 'Hall of Fame' type set up = accessible to all, weather proof, secure.
