Deadlock Pulling it all together, the clubs currently in the League that are older than Reading are:-

Notts County (1862)
Nottingham Forest (1865)
Chesterfield (1867)
Sheffield Wednesday (1867)
Rotherham United (1870)

Stoke are disqualified for trying to claim another club's history.

So did Notts County have to wait for 3 years until their first game!

Stoke City's real formation date is 1873. Rotherham's claim of 1870 is also fake - there's an article about it on a fan's webpage somewhere. Basically they've just taken the date of the oldest football club in the town regardless of the fact that there was no connection to the current Rotherham United.

The old "who did they play against" question is of course posed only by execptionally stupid people. Firstly, just because you're the oldest club in existence now does not mean you were the first ever club. Secondly as someone pointed out, games can easily be arranged within the club (basically the same as a golf club might do now).

Reading used to play games between the town players and the countryside players, whilst Maidenhead used to split between different halves of the town (west and east, I think).

The "different rules" suggestion about the Preston game is just complete rubbish.

usually though, it's more of a rhetorical question as a joke, like "where did flights from the first airport fly to?"

Munich 1860 were formed in 1899, not 1860. It was formd as a wing of the Munich Gymnastic club that was formed in 1860.

The first football club in Germany was formed in Hamburg in 1876 and the oldest club still in existance is Germania Berlin, formed in 1886.

You're right, here it is.

In short, Rotherham Town were formed in 1870, played three seasons in Division 2 between 1893-96, then went bust.

Thornhill United were formed in 1877.

Rotherham F.C. were formed in 1900, they soon changed their name to Rotherham Town, but had no connection to the defunct club. In response, Thornhill changed their name to Rotherham County. The two clubs merged in 1925 to form Rotherham United.

MK Dons were 'founded' in 2004

Other than that I'm pretty sure Dangenham and Redbridge are less than 20 years old

Bristol City FC (1982) Ltd

Formed when Bristol City went into liquidation in 1982

I think after Middlesbrough did a similar thing a couple of years later the rules were changed so a club that goes into liquidation would lose its league status and any new club replacing it would have to start again at the bottom rather replacing it in the position it was formerly in.

Example - Altersh*t FC went bust and thrown out of league - Aldersh*t Town (basically the same club) had to start down the non league pyramid

Isn't it 'South of the banks of the Trent', as Notts County and Forest are on opposite sides of the river IIRC.

Pardon my geographical ignorance, but if one club is one side of the Trent (i.e. North) and the other is the other side (i.e.South) thenI can't see how either statement is correct.

However, if the river runs north-south, then I can't see how this would be a dividing line anyway.

Having checked a map Forest are South of the river and County are North, however the river then travels further south to an area that we are the oldest club south of 8)

I feel all educated !!

I was away checking Google Earth, but got distracted looking at the Mad Stad, wondering how they're going to lift the roof, plonk in some more seats, then bung the roof back on.

Wonder no more - they are going to build a new bigger roof over it all and then take away the old roof

It does cover the front few rows, it's just that rain has a nasty habit of not falling vertically. I blame God.

i do not need to blame a supernatural being for the way rain falls
i say blame gravity, or the laws of physics
