Sonks' injury

by Super Si » 12 Jun 2007 11:52

It is my understanding (from a source at the club) that Sonks' injury will keep him out til at the earliest November.

This combined with the fact that we may have up to 3 centre backs away in the African nations cup in January (Sonks- if fit, Bikey and Sodje) is why we are being linked with lots of centre backs.

I for one hope that we sign someone young, who won't mind waiting for his time to shine in the first team e.g. the lad from Luton

We'll have at least Duberry, Pearce, Ivar and Bennett to cover the CB position if Bikey Sodje and Sonks go to the africa cup of nations.

the Pearce and Bennett may not be Stellar at the role but form what I've seen they can do a job if we have an injury.

If Sonks is out until November I can;t see him playing in the ANC.

In any case it's seemed clear for ages that he's more interested in France than Senegal...

He would still have one month to impress and Senegal have been trying to call him up, I have no doubt they'll try again if he is fit. I don't think the French are ever going to call him up. He'll be better off playing for Senegal.

Given the times he's turned them down I don't see him rushing out there when he's been out for the best part of a year.

Plus you're assuming that if fit in November, he'll walk straight back in to the team.

a) he doesn;t need to impress

b) he'd need to get match fit. I don;t htink a player who has been out for nearly a year can get match fit in a month, especially for a major international tournament

c) he's better off playing for France. By any criteria !

I obviously disagree. I think he'd have a better chance of a regular place in Senegal than France.

Sonko is doing a Kanoute and will eventually cave in to the lesser nation at some stage

One more would be ideal, it seems like we have loads but with the Africa cup of nations coming up that loads suddenly seems like not so loads.. Halls did a good job in CB in a reserve game recently ;)

Pearce'll be good enough and we already have Ivar, Duberry and Gunnarsson who can play there.

He did.
He also said that he was waiting until he established himself in the Premiership until he played full time international football.

That isn't what the club are saying today. Latest update expects him to be playing by end of August.

This may be what the club are saying publicly, but I can tell you that I was very reliably informed that it will be November earliest, unless he has experienced a miraculous recovery in the past 2 wks.

Maybe they're playing it down so that prices aren't inflated for any centre backs that we may be looking to buy. i.e. if clubs see that we are desperate then they may raise their asking price

To be fair, what John Fearn is actually saying is this:

John Fearn He's started running and is doing a lot of preparation work with a view to working on his fitness throughout July and maybe playing again towards the end of August. That would only be six months after the operation so it's the quickest we could hope for. It's early days but things are looking good.

Sonko may not be called up to the Senegal squad for the African Cup of nations. There is a chance they may not qualify.

Sonko is making good progress after an operation to reconstruct a cruciate ligament in his right knee, but is not expected to be ready for first-team action until the end of August at the earliest.

The new season kicks-off on August 11 with the Royals facing Manchester United and Chelsea in their first two games.

Hahnemann broke his right hand during the final game of last season at Blackburn. He had 18 screws and two pins inserted into the hand during surgery in the United States last month.

Sonko has been out since January and physio Jon Fearn told the Reading Evening Post: "He has started running and has been doing light power work. He will hopefully start specific football work in August so he will definitely miss the start of the season.

"But in those weeks he will step it up. It will be interesting to see how he copes, but if the carrot could be playing at the end of August - that will be six months after he had the op in February and Michael Owen was out for 11 months with the same injury."

Fearn added: "Marcus won't be ready for pre-season training, but by the time the season starts he could be okay. His progress is slow because he had quite major surgery on his hand."

Glen Little (calf), Seol Ki-Hyeon (ankle), Bobby Convey (knee), Graeme Murty (calf) and Peter Mate (knee) should all be fit to start pre-season training when the squad return on July 4, but Aaron Brown (knee) will not be ready.
