Oi Oi Saveloy Crap manager, but sad news.

Said so in an MSN convo with other nobbers, but turns out he actually had a good managerial career with marked success. Rotherham & Sheff Utd promoted, and relative success with lesser known international nations. Most recently, a 1-1 draw in charge of Armenia against Portugal on August 22. May have been bombed out of Reading, but not a bad manager at all to be fair. There are a lot worse out there.

Minutes silence/applause on Saturday guaranteed. Just hope Sunderland mention the RFC connection as well.

RIP Ian Porterfield.

One of those managers who travelled the world managing what can only be described as minor countries.

Zambia - after a plane crash in 1993, the side was decimated. Missed out on qualification by a point under his management.

Trinidad and Tobago - narrowly missed out on WC qualification with them as well, iirc.

My first Reading manager and someone I always looked out for in those World Soccer programs, knowing that he'd be managing some footballing outpost.

Did a tremendous job with - IIRC - a Zambian side demoralised and depleted by an air crash. Dind't work out for him at RFC but to be fair it took McGhee as his successor quite some time himself to put the mistakes of the latter part of the Branfoot era right.

11 pages of tributes on an SAFC message board I go on, will definitely be some sort of tribute.

My Ian Porterfield memories were the two great FA Cup home matches against Sunderland and Newcastle at home...
Also, in that run were the games against Welling, it took four matches to get rid of them...that never seemed to end.
Don't forget that he bought 'the Bryan Robson of the 3rd Division'.
When Madjeski turned up, things did need shaking up and of course when that happens the Manager is always the first to leave.
But all memories now and although he's a LEGEND up at Wearside, we have a few memories of the man too...

Including playing a few games for us in about 1977. Remember being quite excited that we'd signed an FA cup winner and remember him in a Reading shirt.
