RIP and eternal thanks for bringing Mick Gooding to the club.

IP's time at the club coincided with many financial difficulties that eventually saw JM take over from Roger Smee.

Fate deals many twists and turns as we watch a team. Everything, good or bad, has led to Reading being where they now are. That Newcastle game saw Porterfield, McGhee, and Gooding feature as an unusual trio that would all manage Reading.

Just one change in that history may have led to a different path. I wouldn't have changed that path for anything.

Oi Oi Saveloy Crap manager, but sad news.

He was a bloody good manager at Roth, Sheff U, Dons. Reading was a bit of a low point for him but the team didn't half improve tactically when he replaced Branfoot. He had no money - all gone on Maskell - and clearly didn't hit it off with JM when JM came in - huge salary and no driving licence. Hell of an accent too, made Steven Hunt sound like Steven Fry!

RIP

Didn't he also bring Keith McPherson to the club?

Sad news.

He was on an absolute hiding to nothing when he joined. The Club was on it's knees.

Nevertheless, as a former player ( Briefly) and Manager of our club, he deserves our respects.

I think so. Was probably the manager that oversaw Williams break into the team.

I believe he signed Jamie Cureton for the Korean side that he managed, although I stand to be corrected on this.

The memories of the FA Cup games vs Sunderland and Newcastle will be my fondest memories

Steve Richardson marked Sunderland danger-man Marco Gabbiadini out of the game. He played in an unusual sweeper/man-marking role for that game IIRC.

What was the reason Porterfield left Reading.

Wasn't it something underhand?

Even though I was a youngster at the time, those cup games with Sunderland and Newcastle were good memories
