Ian Royal We competed all the way and that can only be a good thing. A big defeat could have damaged us mentally, but this is fine.

2 world wars, 1 world cup I argued this case relentlessly after the Everton and Villa matches against huge resistance on this pessimistic board.
And now I make my case again, hopefully not in a "told you so" manner.
Basically I reiterate that it's "business as usual". We played fairly well against Everton and Villa - just as we might have done last season - and the end result was again just as we might have expected. Same against Boro and CIty: played well, this time with good results.
And today against Liverpool, watching it on the the 'net it was clear to me that we put a mighty good show and were arguably unlucky with a defeat (especially with two possibly solid penalty appeals), but either way it doesn't matter we put in a grand performance. One that could, again, have happened last season.
The Bolton game was the wake-up call. Since then we bucked up our ideas and it's been basically "business as usual". i.e. we play well, win some, lose some.
Some people on here were expecting a relegation side to not only stop being a relegation side but bizarrely were expecting us suddenly to become a Title winning side by demading wins against the likes of Everton and Villa A more reasoned and realistic expectation was that we would just go back to being our good old selves: and even in our heyday that meant performances like the one today against Liverpool, like the ones against Everton, Villa, Boro and City, with similar results.
With this approach a handful of us didn't get all depressed when we just lost to Everton and Villa, and didn't start believing we're the best team in the league after Boro and City. And I'm certainly not fussed by losing against Liverpool away in a good hard fought match.
Because it's business as usual.
We'll be ok.

Demanding wins? Most of our wins are fairly demanding. I don't think we are good enough to particularly expect to beat any team in this league to be quite honest. I like the way you make some folk out to be absolute loons for hoping for a positive result from the Villa game for instance, as if a Martin O'Neill side is somehow reminiscent of 1970's Brazil. Villa couldn't even beat the god awful Boro in midweek and are one of a mere 4 teams to have lost to Fulham this season (guess who one of the other three was ).
We could very easily lose the Birmingham game and then the good work (and a little bit of luck) of the previous two weekends will be wasted.

.......and we could very easily beat Brum as well.........the next two games could go a long way to guaranteeing safety. They are both tough but winnable games.
If and its a big if the team play like they did in the second half against Man City we can pick up six points. Maybe optimistic but beither of our forthcoming oppoenets are exactly world-beaters and Brum's away record is nearly as bad as ours.
