Reading boss Coppell – who has already loaned Emerse Fae to Nice and lost winger Glen Little on a free to Portsmouth – is expecting a ‘busy summer’ and would like want-away stars to now put up or shut up.

He said: “I’ve heard a lot about players wanting to leave or saying that their futures will be better served playing elsewhere, but I haven’t heard many saying that they’re desperate to come back to the club and get back into the Premiership.

“I don’t want that attitude and I’m sure the fans don’t want that attitude. I want players who want to play football for this club and so do the fans.

i cant see anything wrong with these statements

Can't see a hell of a lot right with it.

The longer we faff around waiting for these players to move on, the less time we have to get our team together for next season.

so we tout them around on the open market saying we are desperate to get shot of these lads asap
please come and get them

recipe for a bad deal imo.

agree its frustrating, and could leave us getting the team together a bit late
but there aint a choice imo

I don't quite see why we can't build around some of the players that are 'rumoured' to be going. If we're going down the young and hungry route, then plan for the old and full players to be gone and bring in these young and hungry players. Surely if its the cheaper option, then we don't necessarily need to sell to buy throughout the summer.

If the player doesn't want to play for us, then maybe we're going to have to accept a few bad deals just to get a team that Coppell wants.

It would have been simpler to get 1 more point and stay up, wouldn't it!

Old Biscuitman The Board's role is to set policy, including long term goals, and to define a strategy to achieve them, but any intelligent Board first confirms with the organisation's operating management (the people on the ground like Coppell) that the goals are realistic with the resources available. Members don't go spouting off grandiose statements like becoming another Arsenal.

surely it should be every clubs aim to become a winning successfully run club
whether its realistic within a given time frame or not
surely no one aims to bumble around in lower divisions forever

its down to the people reading those statements how they interpret them

and as already discussed-in business terms its more than ok to have an aim that is seen as stretching reality

Southbank Old Boy The bit that stood out for me was "Until we lose – if we lose – players, we won’t know where to fill in the gaps."

Totally accurate yes, a good way to manage the future of any business let alone a football team, no.

I'm sure this is just a throw away line, but I do hope the club have actually got some plans afoot to replace the players most likely to leave. If not it's negligence on their part.

I'm new to this interweb thingummy but I'm learning the jargon. The above is what's known as a "straw man" I believe, ie set up a false premise (that the club won't have plans to replace players should they leave...) in order to knock it down (...if not, it's negligence). I honestly can't see the point of people constantly doing this.

It makes them think they have a point?

See also "not quite disagreeing but framing the points in such a way to make it look like you've disagreed strongly". That's a common one when you dare suggest that some of our players might not have played that well last season ...

I had a point thanks: That if that was the case they're fcuking it up all over again.

If it's not the case and behind the scenes they're fully in control who they want once X or Y leaves then great.

If thats not good enough to add to your discussions on whatever you want to argue over then fine, just don't read it, personally I think it's food for thought.

Relax, its only the start of July. SC has to say something to the mindless news machine and he comes up with some fairly anodine twaddle to keep them happy. Exploring every nuance of his utterings won't help.

What's so right about a situation where we drift waiting for things to happen? :|

Nothing,

Exactly. But you took the second comment there, didn't you?

Maybe you should pause and have a think about what you're replying to before jumping in.

Just a thought.

Been consistent with my replies, whereas you seem to specialise in the highly selective response or the partial quote.

A bit of honesty in your posts might be a thing worth thinking about, or even respondingto points rather than just hammering your own original idea.

Just a thought....

Royalee http://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/football/readingfc/s/2031242_well_need_to_adapt_quickly_says_royals_boss

Silly me for thinking perhaps he may have tried to look at potential top Championship players when we were in the Prem who could make the step up. I also forgot that we'd been in the Premiership for decades and have no idea what this league holds.

Whats the problem? It makes a lot of sense to me!

You're not seriously suggesting we build a team based on rumours, are you? The message from the club is clear - if a player doesn't want to play for us, he won't. But there's no need to drive players to the point of believing they are not part of our plans by "building around" them, just because they'er rumoured to be interested in leaving.
