Nostalgia again - This time pix from 1975/76

by Ark Royal » 08 Feb 2009 22:20

As promised, here are some photos from the 75/76 season - again from the souvenir edition of the Evening Post. No doubt this will spark yet another debate about The Goal! Enjoy.

Fantastic, Ark.... the photo that encapsulates my fomer incarnation of Gordon Cumming's right hook.

The Brentford one - not the Workington effort which, admitedly, was far superior.

Could the HNA moderator create a new Reading FC Picture category to post past and present pictures ?

I think you should. Your "almost" namesake was a dirty sonovabitch. No wonder you chose your hobnob name with Mr Cumming in mind.

Great photos again. Loved Workington away where the crowd appeared incredibly sparse.

You know me that well do you?

Gordon Cumming was dirty?

Well he was taking an early bath in two of those photos. One for fighting and one for breaking the other geezers nose.
Not exactly saintly. I supported the club in those days but only from a distance and never saw him play.

Those are wonderful. I agree there should be a permanent place for these, maybe just sticky this and keep adding more nostaglic pictures.

I was abroad for much of that season but came home at Christmas and made the trip to Brentford 27/12. That game will live long in the memory with Bruce Stuckey's injury time equaliser direct from a corner sending me home delirious.
That game also showed me just how good Robin Friday was at holding the ball up away from home.

I was on the pitch at that Crewe game

Some great memories there, particularly the 5-0 over Tranmere.

Also the season of my first ever away game - Northampton 4-1 Reading

Thanks Seahawk. It was quite a trip down memory lane doing those. Great times.

I have a whole box full of complete Evening Posts, newspaper clippings, photos, old tickets and tons of other RFC ephemera that I will gladly post up. Just have to get the time to sit in front of a laptop and scanner and do it all.

As suggested earlier, perhaps the board administrators can start a Nostalgia section for stuff like this.

Northampton Reading, big Reading contingent that evening ... bad result but made me appreciate our ground. They just had a bit of rope along one side of the pitch. Lincoln and Northampton really were good that season, if I remember rightly.

They used to share with the cricket ground. Northampton always used to play there first 3 or 4 fixtures away at the start of the season as there pitch was used as a car park for the cricket team!

Thanks for these Ark. A succession of Mother/Finance/Wife/Fiance/Wife turf-ous has meant my collection of nostalgia is regualrly consigned to the dustbin, usually without my knowledge.

You can take the boy out of Elm park, but you sure as hell can't take Elm Park out of the boy!!

Happy days, wonder what happened to Gordon Cumming's socks I bought off a guy in the Cambridge stands after the 2-2 draw took us up? No doubt one of my previous relationships surrupticiously binned them.

Anyone on the coach that was bricked by the Cambridge in the way back from that game?

Bit sanitised these days by comparison

My microscopic piece of Friday's shirt cost me 50p. The guy who grabbed it was ripping shreds off and selling on the coach.

That picture of Ray Hiron knocking in the rebound against Brentford is one of my favourite RFC photos. Just the reaction of the South Bank reflects what a tense day that was. The linesman appears to levitating as well!

BTW, the Brentford defender in the picture is ex-Reading player Paul Bence.

In the picture of Ray Hiron equalizing against Doncaster, the Rover far right in the picture is another former great, Les Chappell.

Great stuff.

Went to a couple of games that season.

Any chance of doing the same with the 78-79. My first proper season.

Cheers!

my favourite ever season, never missed a home game (makes up for now)

Home to Scunthorpe (1-0) I had a free ticket from Radio 210, awarded by Mike Read in Woolworths.

I think I could name the full squad by heart and the resuts more or less in order  .

The following season we started brilliantly and ended up relegated. Division 3 was the promised land and we could not hack it.
