Vision To be fair, the sides Wolves were putting to the sword early in the season were saying the same thing about them. There was a period when Burnley were being talked up by everyone they played and its barely a month since Swansea were the new Brazil. Its nice to hear but it doesn't mean anything really. There are plenty of sides in this division that if the majority of their team play at their best can be very good indeed.

We're just one of a number of them in my view but (here's the controversial bit) we have a better more experienced manager than the others.

Absolutely Vision. These kind of statements come out all the time about loads of sides, it's just cliches and although I'm not saying he doesn't believe what he's saying it's a bit like the all to familiar "worst/best we've played since I joined the club" comments you read all the time.

My first thoughts were it sounded like a manager being kind to another manager he respects and knows has come in for a little bit of stick. Then I thought it sounded like a manager talking up a team that he maybe fancies managing when the currect boss quits at the end of the season. Never hurts to build up a bit of a friendly appreciation of a side you might see as your next step!

Nothing to add to the above on the game so only comment was respect for the scantily clad teenyboppers at pre match and half time who performed for us on a freezing pitch by wiggling around to music.

I love the way that 24 hours ago we'd be lucky to get into the play-offs and had very little chance of winning them. Now automatic promotion is ours to lose. The simple truth:

This recent run hasn't been good enough. We were always going to have to play better to win promotion but we were still in a very decent position. We had the quality, we just had to find our early season form.

Now we've got another 3 points towards our cause and we also gave a good performance. If we can follow this up with a similar game at Palace and start a run we have a very good chance of promotion. If this is just a flash in the pan the play-offs beckon, and who knows what could happen then.

Agreed. There's virtually nothing to be extracted from this game about our future prospects. We've put ourselves in a place where we need help from above.

BR2 Always good to read "Back from the game" as Daily Mail described it as a turgid game and Peter Beagrie said that the first half was dreadful.

I saw our goal and Marek's pass to Armstrong looked fairly routine and not some fantastic defence-splitting ball but maybe he beat 10 men before that?

Peter Beagrie obviously hasn't watched us recently because if he thinks that aspects of last night were turgid then Christ knows how he'd describe our performances against Bristol City, QPR, Swansea et al.

IMO we were pretty damn good last night. Not an excellent performance, but a pretty good one none-the-less. Interesting to read the comments whilst chuckling at the HNA hordes self-congratulating themselves after pointing out 4-5-1 was what was needed. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that we played a one-off 4-5-1 last night simply to nullify the Doncaster threat - their ability to keep the ball and make opposition teams chase them. There can be absolutely no doubt that we would have been over-run yesterday if we'd played 4-4-2, so it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we resorted to 4-4-2 for Saturday. I hope we don't, because the formation we played yesterday allowed the beefy backline and defensive midfield partnership to pretty much dominate, and allowed our most creative central midfielder to play the game he likes.

A couple of observations:

The goal was coming. I was never in any doubt we'd score even at around 75-80 minutes. We'd created a few decent openings, three of which Harper spurned (blocked, miscontrol, over). It was a good move, instigated by none other than Jimmy Kebe. For those that are lauding the plaudits on Matejovsky for playing a relatively simple ball out to Armstrong, I'd much rather heap praise on Kebe for his preceding run with the ball, because it was he who dragged the Donny defence inside when he cut inside and passed to Marek. This allowed Armstrong to charge down the line unheeded to receive the ball from Marek, and from then on it was a simple pass, followed by simple cut back, followed by a quite brilliant finish.

Armstrong struggled all evening I felt. His distribution wasn't the greatest, he lost possession a number of times, missed tackles (one of which led directly to a clear Donny chance). His effort was unquestionable, but quality was sadly lacking yesterday. Hopefully a one-off.

Harper - his best game for a long time I felt. He is the water carrier of this team, picks it up off the defence and plays balls to instigate attacks. He hassles, he harries, he organises, he's never in hiding, he always wants the ball. Poor form maybe due to Coppell's insistence at going 4-4-2, and therefore being over-run? Harper's fault or Coppell's?

Andre Bikey HAS to start every game.

Gunnarsson CAN last 90 minutes of a match.

ALOL @ Royalee. Normally a good read if you can pick the insults out of him disagreeing with other posters views. But the comments in this thread are utterly ridiculous.

Harper had a better game but just when you think he's done some good, he knocks ya back down. 3 times last night he fooked up.
Bikey +1
Gunnarsson just about lol

You are the best footballing side I've seen at the Keepmoat this season (except for us of course!).
You nullified our game very effectively and didn't allow us to boss the midfield which is what we have been doing in most games during our brilliant run since Christmas.

One poster picked on a comment by one of our fans - that we were 'holding on' when you scored. That's how I was feeling because you were enjoying a very good spell and by that time I would have been very happy with a point.

It's always a real sickener to lose to a late goal but in fairness to you guys, the victory was deserved.

I just hope we can gain a few more points to complete our rescue act and maintain our place in this league.

You on the other hand, certainly on last night's showing, should deservedly go up automatically.
Good luck for the run-in.

Neil, I think the general feeling on this board, and from other friends who support Watford and Birmingham, is that you are a very good side but lack punch up front. If you get a couple of bargain decent strikers (a la Kitson, Doyle etc), you could become a real force in the Division. I've enjoyed both games against Donny, and have been impressed with you. You're an entertaining and honest team, playing football that is pleasing on the eye, principles which are to be commended.

no

its in our hands with the brum game on the last day.

and thats without brum / wolves losing to each other when they play
and disregarding the liklihood that all three of us will drop points before the end of the season

Doncaster manager Sean O'Driscoll:
"We've been beaten by the odd goal by a lot of teams in this division and come off really disappointed, not with the way we've played, but with quality of the teams that have beaten us.

"But that's not the case this time, I thought Reading were excellent. Our performance was good, we defended really well as a team and were brave on the ball.

"Credit to Reading, I think they're the best side we've played by a million miles. They've got everything, pace, power and a bit of guile that you need and they impressed our boys."

My journey to the match by train was enlivened by the fact that I found myself sitting just behind Chris Coleman, Coventry manager, on the train from London. Coventry play Donny on Saturday and us in a couple of weeks, so he was on a spying mission on both teams. He was on the phone (to another manager by the sound of it) for much of the journey, and I unavoidably overheard some of his conversation. He thinks Reading will go up automatically, despite the recent drop in form "as they are a good strong side." I had a chat with him as we waited to get off the train at Donny - a genuinely nice man, and a fine manager in my opinion.

For the match itself, I took along a mate who lives in Doncaster (as a thank-you for letting me doss overnight at his flat). Since he knew nothing about the Reading team, I had to give him a quick guide as to what to expect. Do you recognise my descriptions of some of our players?

1. World-class pointing. If you want something pointing at, he's your man.
2. Bambi on stilts. Has mastered the art of running very fast, but sometimes omits to take the ball with him.
3. Wild-eyed psychopath. Look out for the 50-yard cross-field passes with a success ration of 1 in 3 (later amended to 1 in 4).
4. (Sub). Looks like he should be a mascot.

As for the match itself, I thought we battered Donny for lengthy periods, although they did have some chances on the break. If their finishing had been a bit better they could have scored two or three (although if Harper's finishing had been better we might have scored 4 or 5).

Marek did have a good match, but I still find him frustrating to watch. If he loses possession, he simply gives up; if the ball isn't coming to him he will seldom chase after it. Mind you, his tackling does leave a lot to be desired. More work required ...

Bikey was simply class, although it does worry me when we are defending a slender 1-0 lead in injury time by having our best Centre Back holding of challenges by the opponents' corner flag (i.e. as far out of position as it is possible for him to get and still remain on the pitch!). Watching football will never be boring with Bikey in the team!

Credit too for Steve Coppell, who did change the formation and personnel, including dropping Steven Hunt. Kebe on the left wing was quite alarming at times, but seemed to alarm the opponents even more than us. I'm sure we won't play this formation every week, but we've proved that we can make it work for us.

Finally Kitson - welcome back Dave. That was a nice way to mark Coppell's 1000th game as manager.

Agreed! All we need to do (it sounds so simple!) is to draw the game we have in hand and then match Brum's results and we arrive on the last day needing to beat them. And we play well against the good sides!

Problems -
1. Brum aren't really a good side
2. We don't do well under pressure from our own fans at the moment

Hmmm! Play Offs then!
