robb the royal
The Mail Coppell's side can win promotion if they win their last two games, starting tomorrow against Norwich City.

(writen on Saturday)
Seeing as they don't know when we are playing, I struggle to believe that he has already decided.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised, he has been a terrific leader, but theres not much else he can do with us, so why stay when theres nothing left to achieve?
If he does go, I'll be hoping for Middlesbrough or Blackburn to go down, Big Sam or Southgate would be handy replacements (if a 'small club' like Reading could get them that is)

Writen on saturday, but intended for publish Sunday?

Steve Coppell will end a 25- year managerial career by leaving Reading at the end of the season, regardless of whether they are promoted to the Premier League.

Coppell, who celebrated his 1,000th game as a manager last month, is sticking by a pledge to close friends that this will be his final campaign despite enjoying the run-in to the season.

The former Manchester United and England star stayed at the Madejski Stadium after relegation last season because he felt he owed the club to try to haul them back into the top flight.

Coppell's side can win promotion if they win their last two games, starting tomorrow against Norwich City. If they do go up, Coppell will feel he has done his job and it is time to hand over the reins.

Owner John Madejski is believed to be aware of Coppell's intention, with former Reading boss Alan Pardew and Alan Curbishley on the shortlist to succeed him.

Coppell, 53, began the first of four managerial spells at Crystal Palace at the age of just 28 and famously took the club to the 1990 FA Cup final. He gave up his chance to succeed at a big club when he quit Manchester City after just 33 days in 1996.

But after spells with Brentford and Brighton, he went to Reading and became their most successful manager.

Is this no more than 2+2=5 as they know he reviews his position at the end of the season?

Or is it true?

If its true I think Alan Curbishley would be the most logical way to go for the club...

Alan Curbishley was interviewed on SSN last week. When asked about a return to management he said there was something he was definitley interested in, but that "someone had to make a decision first".

Read into that what you will.

I too heard Alan Curbishley mentioned before the Sheff Utd game by 'quite a few' supporters in the East Stand. But if not him,who else? Not Alan Shearer, nor Ince for me. Not even Pards or Wise . There again, he nearly went at the end of last season didn't he? It's not over til the fat lady...... and all that.

I heard that club was Newcastle and the person wh had to make a decision was Alan Shearer.

Curbishly is probably edging his bets on the relegation fodder of Newcastle no doubt.

Better chance of getting a top manager if we're in the Premiership. This squad has the nucleus of a decent team but could do with far more of a shake-up than the 106-pointers. Good timing for all concerned, really. Hopefully the existing squad will really want to give Coppell a great send-off. Could work hugely in our favour!

Interesting that this "comes out" (albeit rumour) once playoffs have been guaranteed. i.e. our media relations team have been onto the timing of this news-piece
