Jimmy the Tree
Gordons Cumming Just be thankful we haven't had the sort of people who have been running Newcastle's ship over the last few years.

Or Portsmouth?

Agreed. If you're going to use a ship for your example, it really is more appropriate that you use Portsmouth, rather than Newcastle.

Not really sure that you "run" a ship though, tbf.

A lot of people have missed the point of this thread, its not supposed to be another debate about how the clubs managed. There are times in football where you see things that make you laugh out of irony, this was one of those times for me. I said before I went onto the website there would be another legendary ambition comment from madejski and he didn't disappoint. It was worded so perfectly and so in time with all the others over the last few years as well.

Chairman of football club makes the sort of statement you would expect from a chairman of a football club.

Apparently, you do. To 'run a tight ship' is the cliche, one of those paradoxical/ ironic/ oxymoronic (delete where appropriate) cliche's like 'i'm looking forward to watching reading this saturday'. i'm not actually looking at anything, i'm just hoping to watch.

Anyway, potentialy great signing today. hope the big mouths that slag of SJM might give it a break (another silly phrase) for a little while.

I think if he is going to make statements like this then the fans are entitled to know just how much of his previous investment has been repaid from the large income made in two premier league seasons. Is this information in the public domain ? Has he in fact not been repaid anything or have the tens of millions have been swallowed up in club running costs and larger wages to existing players (new contracts quite common last season).

If he has been repaid some of his investment then he is entitled to that of course BUT he could have chosen to invest that money in new players which could have made our past two seasons very different and we might have been in a very different place now (though more in debt of course unless the continued high premiership income was seeing a return on the investment) . I just think we are entitled to know what has been done with the premiership millions. It has not gone on new or better players.

That large investment would imo have been genuine commitment to the premiership. No one could argue that in comparison to the likes of Stoke, Hull, Wigan..(clubs for which a reasonable comparison could be made) our investment in players of premiership standard in the past two or even three years has been..well shall we say.. conservative.

As of the closing of the year in 06-07 it was zero. I can't remember from the next year. Not a lot, though. I can't be arsed to look it up since I've no axe to grind. The details have been posted on here ad nauseam. maybe someone can give a link.

Fair enough..so the prem money has been swallowed up on the running of the club and wages or is sitting there waiting for BR to spend some of it
and JM is entitled to claim commitment to promotion...and the club is financially sound. I do not have an axe to grind either but just get nervous comparing our investment to clubs in a similar position with a year or two in the prem behind them.

Egocentric, eccentric, floppy-haired, Tory buffoon with appaling taste in women he may be, but he is our egocentric, eccentric, floppy-haired Tory. This, remember, was the man who waxed lyrical about our forthcoming visit to Maine Road five years after Manchester City moved grounds, who once referrred to us playing the famous Preston North End United and who made an impromptu speech from the roof a taxi whilst pie-eyed on drink and adulation after promotion in '06 whilst somehow all at once achieving an impressive degree of reclusiveness in an industry which gives us loathsome rent-a-soundabite investors such as Peter Ridsdale and Pete Winkelman. A successful man who cannot ever remotely be taken seriously in a footballing sense; perfect for a mickey-mouse club like Reading FC.

I think this is a brilliant signing and says an awful lot about
what the club is doing. That is building a side with a good chance
this year and a brilliant chance next year.

We have paid out a million for a very very good manager to bring through
a young side, and now we've got a very good centre-back who could improve for 5-6-7-8 years

I truly believe that Mr (Sir) Madjeski meant what he said and that it will happen this season or next

What is especially nice about this signing is it makes all those
who said we would never spend such money, look more than a bit dumb.

Of course, unlikely they'll apologise.
