Quite a few changes will be made then...

Totally agree with his thinking to be honest.

The FA Cup is a chance to build momentum but the Carling Cup isn't? Eh?

Of course, Royalee, if Coppell had said that he'd have been wrong.

My team:

Hamer; Kelly, Mills, Pearce, Armstrong; Gunnarsson; Matejovsky, Sigurdsson; HRK, Henry; NHunt

If Coppell proposed making 9 changes to the team who played in the league he is disrespecting the cup and trying to lose. It seems it may be a different rule for Rodgers.

That's definitely true for some people, but I've always thought the League Cup was a waste of time so you might as well treat the earlier rounds effectively as friendlies. I was happy for SC to do it as well, but I think he was wrong not to pick his strongest team for the FA Cup, and I'll say the same with BR if he goes back on his word.

Most of the criticism Coppell faced was his approach to the countries premier cup compeition, and the oldest in the world, not the relatively tin pot League Cup.

Personally, as a general rule, I think it's better to make a few less changes. That's for two reasons. Firstly it helps to maintain a balance to the side and any momentum a win will provide, and secondly because those players coming in are playing in a team closer to that of the real first team and so can be judged more fairly than with the wholesale changes Rodgers will make tonight.

Tonight though, I don't disagree with Rodgers approach. Without being too arrogant about it, it is only Burton, but more importantly it's so early in the season that these players do need the competitive games under their belt to get up to speed and challenge for a spot in the first team.

As we progress in the competition (hopefully) I would hope to see Rodgers put out a stronger side though, with just a few changes to try and generate competition and protect against fatigue/injury.

That's what i'd go with tonight. Keep Pearce in so that Mills gets a game with his most likely CB partner, and keep HRK as I thought (in comparison to performances against Chelsea and Shorey in Murty's testimonial) he was relatively poor against Forest, and should be given more game time to impress/progress.
