Gk is a hard one, Sheppard was useless but made some strange but class saves. Gary Phillips, actually kneed the ball into the net , and who was the dickhead from Tranmere that only played once for us away to Leeds in the cup.

Him and Salako were a large part of the reason we went on such a good run of form through the winter of 01/02 and ended up getting promoted.

At Championship level he was an ok player, admittedly he did pass sideways about the same amount as Harper but was no way in the same class and Sean Evers, Michael Meaker, Paul Brooker....

Dissapointed lovetoscore mentioned Westwood - His penalty save against Lincoln (?) helped give Reading the longest winning run at the start of the season. Can't nominate him for being a redhead.
Senior was a bit of a donkey at the best of times - probabaly the most overrated player we had - but that is for another thread.

Indeed - I missed Robin Friday but, for me, James Lambert was one of the most exciting / gifted players to play for Reading in the next couple of decades. Shame it all went awry and he never followed through on the early promise.

He's 36 today!!

It never caught on (!) but that was his only claim to fame. He never really dazzled apart from the Forest game. He was far too cocky for his own good and would often dip in and out of games as and when he pleased. Like Mass Sarr but minus the McDonalds addiction.

Thing is, I saw his 1st dozen or so appearances when he often came on a sub (and I remember an FA Cup match against Brum) and he was absolutely superb - but I then moved away, or fell in love or had kids or some feeble excuse, and then rarely saw us play, so my memories have not been tainted by what came after in his 120+ games for the club.

Can't stop laughing about all the comments about Malcolm Swain!

I went to school with him (Charters, Ascot) & I always remember him wearing short trousers right through to the 3rd Year - this must have hardened him to all the abuse that he received on (and off) the pitch.
He was in the same school team as Tom Ryan who also played for us (but mostly Luton) and I've got a sneaky suspicion that one or two more from that School Team also signed for Reading but never broke through to the 1st Team
