In that case I pray McDermott does well and gets the job.

Who is advising Madejski that Southgate is a good manager and should get the job?

I recommended a player to McDermott some years ago. He got back to me and very politely and in some detail explained why I was talking bollox......and then looked forward to hearing from me again.

It's encouraging that he was willing to take what you said on board - more than you'd get from most club staff.

No idea, but from a selfish point of view I hope he does get it as I've got money on him.

Yep, but despite his dip into Premiership management experience I don't think he'll be billy big bucks, actually more determined to make a career than focus on the financial reward at this stage, so I think he'd be perfect for Mr Mad, 'one for the future', like a lot of our players. If nothing else, it makes for a rollercoaster ride as a fan, even though the wheels nearly came off with BR, TB and TB2 under this approach.

I'm not keen on Southgate, though I like him as a man. Players who go straight into top flight management don't seem to do that well in their next job(s): examples that spring to mind along with Southgate: Coleman (Fulham-Sociedad-Coventry), Pearce (Forest-Man City), Platt (Sampdoria-Forest), Gullit (Chelsea-Newcastle), Vialli (Chelsea-Watford). Strachan is a counter example, though, because he did well at Southampton after taking Coventry down. Also Dalglish did well at Blackburn after Liverpool, though crap at Newcastle and Celtic.

A positive move would be not to appoint him as manager.

It depends what the way forward is. If the aim is to get back in the Prem then no he is not the way forward. However I am not sure that is JM's aim any more. If JM is seeking just to consolidate in the CCC then yes Brian is a safe & experienced pair of hands who the players like and can be relied upon to deliver a mid table finish year on year at minimum cost.

What has annoyed me is the plaudits McDermott gets based on Saturday being 'much better' - it was pretty much exactly the same as the majority of other games this season where we played some good stuff and should have taken more from the game. I like the sound of what McDermott is saying, but this pretty much sums up his input for Bristol City:

Points out that the decision to take off Tabb was not a tactical decision as many of you were giving credit for and using it as a stick to beat Rodgers with, along with stating that McDermott's input was very minimal.

Agreed. Despite the disappointment of the last two home games, we were already on an upward curve, albeit one that wasn't quite steep enough to keep Rodgers in the job. BR must take credit for similar performances to what seems to have happened in Bristol. It's a bit like Labour circa 97-07 at the moment, Maccy D getting the plaudits for maintaining an improvement that was already well under way. Let's hope he doesn't have Gordon Brown's hubris - I really don't want Southgate as manager. Nice guy, but not a particularly good manager in my opinion. Squandered far more at Boro than Coppell is purported to have done here.
