Our Scout

May be a stupid question, but who's the scout now Brian Mac is manager?

I went to Brentford vs Hartlepool today and saw a man in a Reading coat, was wondering if there was any connection

We've never had just one scout, although McD was the 'Chief' scout. I believe Steve Shorey has taken over that role.

I'd say it would be a fair bet that someone in a RFC coat had some connection to the club, but you can buy the coats in the megastore so impossible to say whether the link is official or just as a fan !!

At one stage we had Ty Gooden (ex Swindon winger) scouting for us in France I believe. Would love to know the whole process behind the scouting of players, always been an interesting process, how many scouts the club have, how often are they watching our loan players etc.

Most clubs will have a chief scout who is employed full time by the club. He will then have his own team of scouts, who mainly at this level and above will be on a monthly retainer, plus expenses.

In my experience loan players are watched periodicaly, although if the club are well organised and have a decent analyst they will have dvds of most of the games players play on loan.

I think Reading has a very good scouting structure, where as a lot of clubs are pretty all over the place and most scouts do tend to be old fuddy duddys and rather boring.

Never aproach a scout at a game, you won't get away!!

Reading's recently promoted chief scout can't hide his enthusiasm for the new role

You can also engage a scouting company to go and look for certain types of players or report on players at specific games, rather than run your own scouting network. For example IMS scouting.

I forgot to mention, he was sitting in the directors bit of the ground. And left pretty early, maybe he had seen enough.

If he was a scout, and scouting anyone in particular, Charlie Macdonald would be the most likely

I heard he was scouting Jay Tabb, Stephen Hunt, Sonko and Ingimarsson. I may be incorrect though.
