Federici wants New Deal.

World Cup goalkeeper Adam Federici is desperate to pen a new Royals deal when he returns from the tournament in South Africa.

The Australian, who is out of contract next summer, is back-up to Fulham's Mark Schwarzer for the Socceroos who take on Germany in Durban on Sunday (7.30pm kick-off, live on ITV).

Liverpool and Tottenham were monitoring the 25-year-old’s progress last season and were reported to be preparing bids of around £2million.

But Federici, speaking from his national side’s base in Johannesburg, told getreading that he has no interest in moving to the Premier League to play second fiddle to anyone.

He said: “It’s no secret that I want to be playing week-in-week-out and I feel as if I’m improving all the time with every game I play for Reading.

“I would love to sit down with the club when I get back from South Africa and talk about a new deal.

“I’ll be as fired up for the new season as anyone coming into pre-season on the back of being involved in a World Cup.”

Manager Brian McDermott is keen to keep hold of his first-choice keeper who last season filled the void left by USA and Wolves star Marcus Hahnemann when he was released by Reading.

However, the 49-year-old boss said that talks would be put on hold allowing the player to focus all his attentions in this summer’s tournament.

“With the World Cup coming up then there is no point in discussing his contract,” said McDermott.

“It’s important that we let him concentrate on his job with Australia and then we will look at it after the World Cup.

“Adam and I have a good relationship and he has been at the club for quite a long time now. He looks after himself and he’s had a decent first season with the No.1 shirt at Reading.”

Federici isn’t the only first-team squad member keen to sort out his future.

Striker Shane Long, who was reported to be attracting interest from Birmingham City, and midfielder Jem Karacan are both out of contract at the end of next season.

And director of football Nick Hammond added: “Players who have a year left on their contracts will no doubt be mindful of that right now.

“We will look at these when the players come back for pre-season and I will meet with them and their representatives then.

“We are constantly reviewing players’ contracts and it’s something that we look at throughout the season as you saw with the extension that we offered to Gylfi Sigurdsson.”

Ideal Football player in wants more money shocker.

If that was the case surely he would see out the remainder of his contract, leave on a free and pocket a load more money?

After his comments about wanting to play in the Premiership and the apparent interest in him, I'm thinking he wants a nice big pay rise to stick around. I'd rather he remained on what he's on and see how he goes next season.

One very average season does not warrant a new deal. I'd see how he goes next season and look at it then, but if we get a good offer for him I'd sell him so we can afford Kish and Griffin.

Nice one, so we see how things go next season and if he has a blinder he walks off to the Premier league for free! OR we could sign him to slightly improved contract for say 3 seasons and either he becomes our definate number one for the future or we sell him next summer and recoup the money of the improved contract and more.

Agreed, of course he should be signing a new contact. Anyone with a year to go should be, unless they want out or we want them out.

One year of 50% ok-ish performances and 50% solid performances doesn't warrant a new contract in my eyes, especially not when we're trying to cut the wage bill.

See how he performs next season, then give him a contract in January if he impresses.

While your opinions lacked credibility prior to last season, the Rodgers love-in has left you completely bereft of oomph. Soz m8, but LOL.

Federici makes easy saves looked difficult, can't catch crosses, his decision making is poor and his distribution's overrated. He cost us far too many goals last season and I'm confident that at least one of Hamer and McCarthy will be better than him.

You strike me as the sort of bloke will demand change and then complain that the new bloke isn't as good as the old one and so call for change again.

Federici is a perfectly adequate CCC 'keeper and better than plenty in this league.

You mean like our fans kept doing all season? I've given Federici a chance and he's not good enough - his errors are fundamental flaws having played in goal, his footwork is appalling meaning he is regularly positioned poorly to keep out fairly routine shots, he doesn't dominate his area and his handling is poor. McCarthy is in the U21's squad and Hamer has been involved in a promotion with Brentford and was voted player of the year which is very hard to win for a keeper.

Acknowledged.

However, while I'm sure that the other two have gained valuable experience on their respective loans, Federici is the senior pro and, based on the last couple of seasons, is deserving of starting the coming season as the number one. If he fluffs his opportunity then fair play, but I think you're being swift in writing off a player who is still learning himself.

One of Hamer, McCarthy and Andersen probably will be better than Federici, in the future. But the fact is Federici is the best 'keeper we have at the moment. Hamer needs games at League One after a season sitting on the bench. He's only played at League Two and looked very nervy in his one appearance.

McCarthy has had one season of playing first team professional football. I'd rather he'd managed two at least before he takes the big job with us.

Allowing a player to run out their contract when they are perfectly adequate is stupid. Especially when they want to sign on for longer and you need time to bring your excellent young 'keepers on a bit before they're ready to take over.

hamer will be number 4 behind mccarthy and andersen, neither of whom were faultless last season - so feds has improving competition but not enough to dislodge him..

If we let Feds go we'd have to get someone in to replace him as I don't believe McD would want Hamer or Anderson as our no1 at this moment in time - replacing Feds would be too costly - and we don't want to be spending any money at all if we don't have to, so I think he'll get a 2 year deal.
