Never got bored of after every home game in the Rendezvous when Ray came in someone would say:

"Are you tired Ray, it looks like you need arrest"

For some reason he was the only one that never laughed.

The chant just started on the Southbank (I believe it was usually Royal with Cheese or Toxteth O'Grady) every time Ray did his lap of the pitch and got in front of us.

Happy days

They were far better times. There was something malicious and unpleasant about Elm Park under the surface. Probably why I liked it so much, that it was 'secreted' in such a way.

Five syllables and three words, Ray's 'chant' carried some of the essence of that rancid, beautifully decrepit place.

*knocks one out into faded old programme*

I wholeheartedly concur. Reading fans used to be a completely unforgiving lot, if they latched onto something they wouldn't let it go. A shame things have gotten into such a sanitised state now, we could do with some of that nastiness back.

A lot of this was because of the anonymity that terracing afforded. You'd just hear voices rising from the crowd without ever really knowing where they came from. In the East Stand you're exposed and the culture of the place is for the masses to glare you down if you disturb the torpor.

I loved the Southbank, but that culture has gone forever. RIP.

ok ok ok. I've read through the thread, and can someone explain the whole "Arrest Ray Ilsley" joke, for us minors.

btw, he is a right grumpy kunt. We had our cup final on the pitch t'other week, and after the game we was walking off(after winning) and I start to dribble the ball towards the goal in the South Stand to wack it into the net(what dreams are made of btw) He clocks me doing this mid-run, and shouts "get off the pitch"(I mean what the fuck grandpa, we've just played 90 mins on here, go and break your hip)....anyway, I carry on running, and before you know it, he is on the pitch. I knock it round him, and slot it home 8)

I skinned Ray Isley! Tekkers!

You're only about 15 though so the body heals quicker then.

BTW did you dribble it right up to the edge of the 6 yard box because that was the furthest away you could be and still be certain of scoring?

True dat.

Yes, ofcourse. When you played on the Mad Stad pitch, did you do the same?
