In my time supporting RFC I'd say Mark White was probably the best, although of course he played at a lower level than Shorey.

Think he could have been better than Shorey at his full potential though. Certainly a better defender.

marcusopp A category which definately includes Ian Harte!

It would if he was a left back.

1. Nicky Shorey
2. Dylan Kerr
3. Chris Armstrong

for me.

Y21_Royal 2 pages and no mention of Matt Robinson. What's going on?

Had the most impact as a new left back definitely.

But was far from being technically the best!

Did anyone mention Paul Bodin, class act! (I'll get my coat...).

Rooster and Boomer, there were 2 great reading characters. Rooster was never the same after he got kicked in the chest and broke several ribs (iirc). Boomer had one of the best leaps I've ever seen, must be the shortest player we've had playing at centreback/sweeper!

For me it has to be Nicky Shorey, closely followed by Armstrong and Bertrand. Mentions must be given to Steve Richardson and Michael Gilkes although in my opinion Gilkes was obviously a winger who could do a good job at left back. Dylan was a decent left back who did a very good job for us, although I'm not sure he should have been our player of the year. Matt Robinson was an excellent signing, especially considering some of the dross we were served up between himself and Dylan Kerr.

Thomas L'Heureux De La Cruz.

(Mind you, that goal he scored when he started the move in our end was sublime!)

pea Ian Harte

If you look at their achievements

Shorey.

Harte's good, but he's never played for England.

Do you ever think you should just give up?

Excluding the mention of him on page 1, you're absolutely right.

Snowball but if someone had said, "We'll give you seven million plus Harte and Kish" for Gylfi
I would have thought that an incredibly good deal for the club.

Just to nit-pick, it's £7m minus the values of Harte and Kish (assuming that there's a loan fee for the latter).

Hat trick.

Tad Showbiz Easy. Dylan Kerr.

The goal in the 4-0 hammering of Stoke in our first season in what is now known as the championship stands out as one of the best I've seen. Solid left back and decent going forward. I can't remember the reasons as to why he left, was he sold, released or did he retire?

He was shagging Quinn's Mrs wasn't he? He went to Kilmarnock IIRC.

Dylan Kerr

Dylan Kerr (born January 14, 1967 in Valletta) is a Maltese-born English former professional footballer. He played as a defender, specifically a left-back. In September 2009 he became an assistant manager with South African club Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Kerr began his career at Sheffield Wednesday in 1984. He didn't make any league appearances for the club in his four years at Hillsborough, and left to join South African club Arcadia Shepherds in 1988.

A year later, Kerr returned to England to join Leeds United. He only made thirteen league appearances in his four years at Elland Road; however, he was also loaned out to two clubs: firstly Doncaster Rovers (with whom he scored his first League goal), then Blackpool. In his three-month spell at Blackpool in 1991–92, he scored one of the team's goals in a 5–2 victory over Lancashire rivals and eventual division champions Burnley at Bloomfield Road.

In 1993, Kerr moved to Mortimer Common and joined Reading, with whom he would make the most league appearances of his career: 89, including five goals. He was a member of the Royals' Division Two championship-winning side, and also when the club finished runners-up in the Division One the following season.

In 1996, Kerr signed for Scottish club Kilmarnock. He made 61 league appearances for Killie in four years. At the end of his first season with the club, he won the Scottish Cup. Not long after the Ibrox final, Kerr suffered a recurring groin injury that kept him on the sidelines for over a year.

Kerr was eventually released by Kilmarnock, and after one league game on loan to Carlisle United he joined Slough Town in October 2000.

Senior career appearances = 229

Sheffield Wednesday - 0
Arcadia Shepherds - blank
Leeds United - 13
→ Doncaster Rovers (loan) - 7
→ Blackpool (loan) - 12
Reading - 89
Kilmarnock - 61
→ Carlisle United (loan) - 1
Slough Town - blank
Kidderminster Harriers - 1
Hamilton Academical - 17
Exeter - 5
Greenock Morton - 22
East Stirling - 1
Harrogate Town - blank
Gateshead - 3
Hamilton Academical - 16

Stunned at how few games Kerr played in his career and how he never really settled anywhere. 89 for Reading being the most for any club.

Ideal
If you are signing 33-year-olds for £50k from league one and thinking that is the way forward, and that is "an excellent purchase", then that is a recipe for disaster.
