4+ goal winning margins

by Elliott » 25 Oct 2010 21:05

So over the years I can recall us winning a game by 4 or more goals on several occassions, the most recent coming to mind being vs Burnely, Peterborough, Sheffield Wednesday (twice), Watford, as well as Derby and West Ham in the Prem days.

So my question is, when was the last time Reading received a 4 or more goal drubbing from another team?! There have been plently of 3 goal margin defeats in recent times vs QPR, Plymouth, West Ham, Bolton to name but a few.

But when was the last time we were beaten by 4 or more?

I was at that Stockport away match.

Real "why do I do this" moment.

I remember the Bristol Rovers game as if it were yesterday, still gives me nightmares.
I was 10, and I've never heard my father swear so much before or since.
And I've never been so stunned watching a football match in my life.

After we lost 18-0 I said the very same thing:

That 18-0 defeat at Preston was one of the worst away trips I have been on. It was obvious from the start that the Manager had played the wrong formation and should have played an extra holding midfield player.

The journey back was miserable too as there were a lot of hold ups on the road back. Those highwaymen were a real nuisance.

Then once I got home and looked on HNA everyone was saying it was the worst defensive options the club had ever had.

Have been there when we sufferd 4 goal hammerings by Oxford and Swindon in the 80's. The worst though was Chesterfield away around 81 I think? We were behind the goal on the open terrace at the old Saltergate ground when Ollie Kearns gave us the lead after 5 minutes. Looking back we should have left then as Chesterfield went on to score SEVEN. And people moan now when we lose 1-0............ :o

Reminds me. We were losing 9-0 at HT at Liverpool University
so I took the keeper off and went in goal.

Final score, yep 18-0

Wasn't that the game where Sky Sports News ran out of carrier pigeons to carry the score updates? They never took more than 12 IIRC.

Apart from the Bristol Rovers debacle the worst I remember was Walsall away in 1977. It was 0-0 at half-time and we went on to lose 6-1 !
I think I left before the end

I was at that one too. It just became ridiculous. I remember turning to the guy next to me (who I'd brought to his first game) as soon as we conceeded the fifth and telling him it'll finish 6-0 because we never just conceed 5.

I still think that the 3-0 drubbing by a really shite Wimbledon side on boxing day was the worst game I've ever seen. They were awful, but still looked a totally different class to us. Shorey looked like a pub team player not the best left back I'd ever seen play for us.

I missed that one and phoned my mate at half-time for a score update. I'll never forget his exact words : "It's nil-nil but it's very tight. It could go either way....."

I seem to remember a young Jobi McAnuff scoring for Wimbledon that day.

Yep, iirc him and possible Agyemang? absolutely destroyed our defence. I can remember the emotions clearly and I have several pictures of the game in my head, but I don't remember the actual physical events of games well after such a long time.

The title of the thread is about games won by four or more. Elliott fondly remembers our wins and then goes onto posit the perfectly reasonable question of when we have lost by four or more as a contrast. No u-turn there, I'm afraid. Poor attempt at being outraged by a flip-flop situation of your own mind's creation.
