Back From The Game - Chelsea *Moderated* (H)

by loyalroyal4life » 22 Feb 2011 22:48

Relieved to finally get 3 points from 2 quality finishes from BOTH our strikers (can't remember last time they both scored)

Although we didn't play brilliantly we did more than enough and controlled the game throughout.

Leighterwood was class again, we really do need to get him on a permanent at the end of the season.

Thought Griffin looked more than capable at left back and would be more than pleased for Harte to remain OUT of the team

Good to see kebe play well throughout the game, had their left back in his pocket

Hopefully we can build on this win at Palace.

Nothing more to add to this really, apart from Cummings was class, and Henry was pure toilet.

Kebe/Long man of the match.

Oh the ref, complete and utter oxf*rd AGAIN!

Agree, forgot to mention the ref was shocking...again. I hope we get a better run of refs for the remaining games

According BBC Berks you're going up again now after this win as you have an easy run in.

Shaun Cummings is a star in the making.

The bald one needs to be completely scalped if he drops him again after such a fantastic performance. At last a full back with pace who can defend and attack. He even got himself right into the centre of their area for a shot after a great interchange of passes and speedy movement off the ball. His confidence appears sky high and he was telling more senior players what to do.

Shane Long will be off come the end of the season and who can blame him for wanting to go to a bigger club with genuine ambition. He thoroughly derserves that opportunity. He was fantastic tonight. His work rate and pace are both incredible as is his ability in the air. Come the summer the manic cloth cutter will be rubbing his hands with glee at such a fantastic profit. If the supporters are really lucky they might get Legs as a 'replacement' for Long.

Cummings looked gd, added some much needed pace in our defence . Whole team
played well, McAnuff had a really gd second half and Kebe had a much better game. Looking forwards to having Pearce back.
Ref was utter garbage,so many pushes, shoves and fouls on our players went unnoticed. Amusing when he gave us a throw in, in the south east corner when it was so obv theirs.
Starting to get a stiff neck from all the hoofing recently
Journey home with the 'wall fans now :|

Much better all round.

Is it a coincidence but the last time Ian Harte did not play we won and tonight he did not play and we won again. He might be good at set plays but the defence is so lacking in pace when he plays and he offers little threat going forwards apart from set pieces - and even those have been less effective recently.

I thought Cummings was outstanding as of course was Leigertwood. Griffin excellent at left back and Long and hunt worked well together. Great to see Hunty getting back to his best. I will give Cummings MOTM just because his comeback from last season debacle performances must be one of the greatest football come backs ever. Well done to the lad and could yet go on to be a Reading legend. If he does not play on Saturday I will be furious.

Tabb tries hard but looking forward to Karacan being back on Saturday. Win the next two league games and beat Everton in the Cup and it may not be season over just yet.

Cummings had a decent game. Not sure he was quite as good as earlier comments, but a revelation in comparison to last season's performances. As a defensive unit we were at sea for worrying stretches of the game. Millwall's goal was as soft as you like. The longer the game went on, the team had less and less confidence in McCarthy's kicking. He really did stick to his line and nothing else.

Going forward (and in centre midfield) we looked good. Long was superb, probably MOM, and it was lovely to see a forward partnership delivering the goods. Leigertwood, again, was top drawer. Two games on the trot he's wowed with his quick feet.

I thought Henry was alright. OK, it was his big game, but there was more purpose and output, than we saw in the majority of appearances for us.

Decent enough performance, less aimless long ball, good to eek out a deserved win which just about keeps the top 6 in reach anyway. Look how much more defensively solid we were without Harte, oh I forget we missed his corners and freekicks :| - how many assists has he provided from these? Keeper looked understandably nervy but playing in a winning team will only help. Leigertwood imperious again, good to see him come over to the fans with the flag and also salute the East Stand. Good performance from Cummings, Hunt much improved.

Pretty boring stuff tbh as we win draw and lose our way to an 11th place finish.

This was one of the wins but it wasn't a thing of beauty and there really is no fluency in the side these days.

Thought we did better than Watford, typical mid table clash with us surprisingly being more clinical than they were. That back four has got to stay for the next few games, it looked solid apart from the goal which was a very good finish from Harris. Very different feeling seeing him score against us now than when he first came on the scene, good pro.
Long was exceptional, absolute cert to leave to " balance the books" in the summer and hunt did well also. Still don't see enough momentum or any sign that we'll scrape the play-offs, but happy with a win to keep those feint hopes alive. Mikele is just exceptional, I cannot work out why he's not in the QPR team alongside tarabt, he fits EVERYTHING that Neil Warnock usually goes for in a midfielder... an absolute fighter and dominant force who can play a pass and create the odd opportunity, if we get him it'll be a very good signing.

A thoroughly enjoyable game tonight, a very different feel to the game, most likely because we had two full-backs with energy who were able to overlap. I am so chuffed for the lad Cummings and IMO we should get him on a long contract NOW, because he may well be a star in the making.

Don't get me wrong, he may still blunder at the back, but he's young and full of energy and he's going to be a very, very good player.

I seriously wonder if the side was more up for it because they felt they had more capable players in the full-back positions? The player who most showed that "up-for-it-tonight-edness was Kebe who ran his heart out. Great to see.

Two VERY good goals. Goal 1 started with Elwood AGAIN winning ball (how he does it so often I do not know). The ball found it's way (via NcAnuff?) to Long on the left who blew the defender away with sheer pace and got in a good ball picked up by Hunt and smacked home. Not sure if it got to Hunt "clean" (ie Long's assist) but Long made the goal with his run.

Second goal was a Hunt cross, fed brilliantly by Kebe, who had received the ball after another tackle won (was it Elwood or Cummings? Can't remember but another 4-man move and a great finish by Shane who is coming up nicely on the rails and my £20 EW at 25-1 looks better and better.

Shane was limping in the second half. Please God don't let him get fully fit...

New Keep did OK. Didn't look to have much chance with the goal (yet again we start the second-half badly). His kicks were a bit flat, but only one was dodgy.

Griffin switched to LB with apparent ease and did a good job. A very under-rated player IMO.

Elwood had another very, very good game. PLEASE people do NOT vote for him as Player of the Year. Twitter him and explain that we daren't. Sadly his price goes up every week. PotS would probably stick £300,000 on the bill and we won't get him. If we don't go up this year, Elwood could lead us into an automatic spot next year. He's the cleverest, neatest midfielder I've seen at this level. He wins so many tackles, many of which he shouldn't.

There was a moment around 72 minutes where he could see he wasn't going to keep the ball. He anticipated what the Millwall player would do and just picked up the flick. Absolute class and no accident. If he had a twin brother, that would be our midfield sorted for 3 years.

The Noel Hunt/Shane Long combo is now so clearly our best. You can't argue with the stats, 16 goals in 13 paired starts and the assists are starting to mount as well. Noel is now our top player for assists with 6 (same as McAnuff but in less than half the minutes). Noel now has a goal (6) or an assist (6) 12 off in 1440 minutes, one or t'other every 120 minutes. He may not LOOK like he's playing brilliantly, but the stats don't lie.

Sometimes things just work, the confidence comes. Like dropping Harte even though it meant shifting Griffin and bringing in a youngster who a year ago looked washed-up. (How do those moaners look now, eh?)

We looked far more lively and the wingers looked a lot happier. Hartey should have to sit out some games now and stay out until one of tonight's FBs is injured or loses form.

7.0 McArthy
7.5 Griffin
7.0 Ingi
7.0 Mills
8.0 Cummings Well done the lad. McDermott keep this FB set-up at Palace!

9.0 Elwood
8.0 Tabby
8.5 Kebe. Ran his socks off, made a goal
8.0 McAnuff

8.5 Long. Worked very hard despite carrying injury, an assist or almost-assist and a well-taken goal.
8.0 Hunt. Looks like he still has sharpness to achieve, will get even better. Good goal and good assist.

These two, with a bit of luck could get us into the play-offs yet

Churchy. Looked livelier, but will need 25-30 minutes, not 10. Not close to challenging Noel for the Long-foil spot.

Not the best game but three points for once the tangos wernt to involved soset up fr a cracking atmosphere , millwall fans made a few moves over the net more as a token gesture than anything . Cummings top notch and was ledge and long . Palace at the weekend lets hope 3 points and maybe we can push on and have a decent end of the season.

But can you point to one thing he did wrong all night? And even if you can, those can be offset by half a dozen good things for each negative. Tackling was good, positioning was good, heading was good, control good, passing good, movement off the ball good, communication good, crossing good (possibly with one exception), supporting attack good, attacking itself good!

Not a classic, but having been on the run we have then if you gave us the choice of an exciting game or 3 points I know which one I'd take.

Some random thoughts:

Excellent to see Cummings back, and he really does deserve all the credit he's getting for the progress that he's made. Also the way he's shut up and got on with things by working hard is admirable.

Griffin looks accomplished at left back - he's left foot is decent and suddenly we felt much calmer and more solid at the back because of him. He linked up well with McAnuff and got forward more last night than Harte has done all season too. Credit here to McDermott - we could ALL see that Harte didn't deserve a place in the team and I was just getting to the point where I believed that McDermott was blind to this and refused to drop him. (That said, he'll probably go and reinstate him on Saturday now, at which point I'll be livid).

I thought Kebe was excellent, and was particularly pleased to not see him fade in the second half. Great tracking back too, and like the way he mixed it up a bit more last night in terms of when he dribbled and when he passed.

Glad to see Tabb back. Think him and Leigertwood complimented each other well, and while I think we'll struggle to show much flair against the better teams with that partnership, I'd like it to be the one we take with into the games v teams below us like Palace and Boro.

Hunt and Long finally managing to look like a partnership, and glad to see them both score. All the more pleasing that tehy buried what were really the only chances that they had (that I can remember).

The ref was awful. In fact, all the officials were. I can't believe how he deemed it suitable to play on when Mills went down with a head injury. He even went to blow up and saw that Millwall had a chance so played on. As soon as we got the ball back he went to blow up again, then the Millwall player got the ball back and he played on. Disgraceful.

While I'm definitely not getting carried away by a scrappy 2-1 win, and maintain that we'll end up somewhere between 8th and 12th, if you look at our run-in we actually have a decent set of fixtures. Would like to think we'll get something out of Palace, Boro, Preston, Barnsley and Portsmouth - then who knows what can happen?

Well, I could be picky and say his double-attempt-on-goal late in the second half wasn't the best. But no, he had a decent game. He also impressed against Palace IIRC, you can see the benefit of the coaching he's received over the last 12 months. Certainly looking good for RB when Griffin hangs up his boots. At the moment, Griffin's experience is vital. For me, he's the real leader in our back five.
