A thoroughly enjoyable game tonight, a very different feel to the game, most likely because we had two full-backs with energy who were able to overlap. I am so chuffed for the lad Cummings and IMO we should get him on a long contract NOW, because he may well be a star in the making.
Don't get me wrong, he may still blunder at the back, but he's young and full of energy and he's going to be a very, very good player.
I seriously wonder if the side was more up for it because they felt they had more capable players in the full-back positions? The player who most showed that "up-for-it-tonight-edness was Kebe who ran his heart out. Great to see.
Two VERY good goals. Goal 1 started with Elwood AGAIN winning ball (how he does it so often I do not know). The ball found it's way (via NcAnuff?) to Long on the left who blew the defender away with sheer pace and got in a good ball picked up by Hunt and smacked home. Not sure if it got to Hunt "clean" (ie Long's assist) but Long made the goal with his run.
Second goal was a Hunt cross, fed brilliantly by Kebe, who had received the ball after another tackle won (was it Elwood or Cummings? Can't remember but another 4-man move and a great finish by Shane who is coming up nicely on the rails and my £20 EW at 25-1 looks better and better.
Shane was limping in the second half. Please God don't let him get fully fit...
New Keep did OK. Didn't look to have much chance with the goal (yet again we start the second-half badly). His kicks were a bit flat, but only one was dodgy.
Griffin switched to LB with apparent ease and did a good job. A very under-rated player IMO.
Elwood had another very, very good game. PLEASE people do NOT vote for him as Player of the Year. Twitter him and explain that we daren't. Sadly his price goes up every week. PotS would probably stick £300,000 on the bill and we won't get him. If we don't go up this year, Elwood could lead us into an automatic spot next year. He's the cleverest, neatest midfielder I've seen at this level. He wins so many tackles, many of which he shouldn't.
There was a moment around 72 minutes where he could see he wasn't going to keep the ball. He anticipated what the Millwall player would do and just picked up the flick. Absolute class and no accident. If he had a twin brother, that would be our midfield sorted for 3 years.
The Noel Hunt/Shane Long combo is now so clearly our best. You can't argue with the stats, 16 goals in 13 paired starts and the assists are starting to mount as well. Noel is now our top player for assists with 6 (same as McAnuff but in less than half the minutes). Noel now has a goal (6) or an assist (6) 12 off in 1440 minutes, one or t'other every 120 minutes. He may not LOOK like he's playing brilliantly, but the stats don't lie.
Sometimes things just work, the confidence comes. Like dropping Harte even though it meant shifting Griffin and bringing in a youngster who a year ago looked washed-up. (How do those moaners look now, eh?)
We looked far more lively and the wingers looked a lot happier. Hartey should have to sit out some games now and stay out until one of tonight's FBs is injured or loses form.
7.0 McArthy
7.5 Griffin
7.0 Ingi
7.0 Mills
8.0 Cummings Well done the lad. McDermott keep this FB set-up at Palace!
9.0 Elwood
8.0 Tabby
8.5 Kebe. Ran his socks off, made a goal
8.0 McAnuff
8.5 Long. Worked very hard despite carrying injury, an assist or almost-assist and a well-taken goal.
8.0 Hunt. Looks like he still has sharpness to achieve, will get even better. Good goal and good assist.
These two, with a bit of luck could get us into the play-offs yet
Churchy. Looked livelier, but will need 25-30 minutes, not 10. Not close to challenging Noel for the Long-foil spot.
