previous Citeh cup encounters

previous Man city vs Reading FA cup ties, not sure how many people on here are old enough to remember the games back in the 60s.
a very credible 0-0 draw at Maine road with Colin Bell blazing a penalty over the bar, we got slaughtered in the replay 7-0.
I went to the next game we playbed them at Maine road, we took the lead through Scott Taylor I think before Gary Flitcroft scored..again thrashed in the replay 4-0, Im not entirely sure how acurate I am here, my memory isnt what it was..there was another reply I think, this time we lost 2-1.

Ah, I remember going 1-0 up through Scotty Taylor at Maine Road, a great strike IIRC.

The 0-0 / 0-4 games were in 93-94 season i think. I remeber Niall Quinn scoring a headed winner, perhaps the following season when they beat us 1-2. Was that the same game as Steve Lomas got very excited when scoring and Jimmy Quinn scored a header for us?

I even remember the qote on the BBC 6 o'clock news on the day of the 1-1 at Maine Road: "... and the underdogs have their day" (with a clip of Taylor scoring).

The 4-0 defeat at Elm Park was my first ever Reading game.

And 4,000 Reading fans going radio rental when it flew in. IIRC, this game took place shortly after a young girl got torched to death at a bus stop in Manchester. One of the supporters coaches had a collection on the way up, called in at the local police station and handed over some money and a bouquet of flowers as a sign of respect and condolence to the bereaved family.

I remember that game and replay in 67/68. There was a special train going up to Manchester on the Saturday. Really good Reading support in a 40,000 crowd at Maine Road. We played City at the same time as United played Tottenham at OT. I remember the City and United fans got together to attack us and the Spurs fans singing 'Manchester Boot Boys'. I can also remember the Reading fans marching through Manchester from the station to Maine Road, and we were all singing (obviously in a non-threatening way). I can also remember a young boy came over to us when it looked like we might get a result, pointing to the Kippax stand and saying 'They've sent me over to say that if you win, you're not going home'. Well it frightened me because I was only a young child. I can remember some trouble at Manchester station (Picadilly, I think) between Utd and Spurs fans, which was well controlled by the police. 0-0 the result, with a replay the following Wednesday. I remember running from school on the Monday to join a massive queue for tickets.

As previously stated, we lost the replay 7-0. City went on to win the League that season, and looked every inch of it in that match.

The 1-1 draw with City beginning of 93 when Scotty scored. Fully deserved the draw. I had returned from Florida only the day before and it was fu cking freezing. Other thing I remember when driving back was freezing fog on the M40, out of windscreen wash, so pulled over and stood on the bumper and pissed on windscreen. Happy days.

Was that the year we beat Blyth Spartans? Games against Div 1 sides were a bigger deal in those days, because they were so few and far between.

We must have met HR because I was on that train as well.
The replay was the best I have ever seen a side play against us at any level apart maybe from the Arsenal 4-0 against us at home in the Premier League.
It was no surprise to any of us after that 7-0 to see City go on and be champions and then FA Cup winners.
BTW Facaldaqui I think it was Coleman who missed the penalty.

All I remember from the 68 games was that Reading played in all white kit in both games. In those days Reading played in all sky blue which clashed with City's colours.

I thought it was Tony Coleman who missed the penalty.

Reading beat Blyth in 1972 before playing Arsenal in the next round.

Correct. It was Tony Coleman. They were superb in the replay, a footballing lesson. I was an awe-struck 11-year old watching from the top of the wall at the Tilehurst End. Worthy league champions, followed by a cup win, followed by success in Europe.

Was it Mike Sheron who scored for them to equalise Taylor's goal? Think it was a through ball by Flitcroft. Great game.

The other recent City cup game was a 2 leg league cup game (prob 2nd round) and again we did really well there getting an away draw in first leg. Think it was McGhee championship season.

Screw the cup games, the 2-0 at Eastlands on 3rd Feb 2007 was the one. I was in hospitality with 8 Reading fans and 1 City fan (who was the "stag" on the stag do we were on). Lita was on fire and got both goals, the 2nd an absolute peach following a Bobby Moore style tackle by Shorey to stop Micah Richards, get the ball to Kitson to play the perfect through ball to a storming Lita to bash in one for the cameras.

Best game in the Premiership that one............... Preferred that to Liverpool, Tottenham, and the West Ham thrashing.

Can't speak for the 68 games, 14 years before I was born. Jan 93 1-1 draw, Scott Taylor with a brahma of a strike equalised late on, around 80 minutes I think, by Mike Sheron. The replay was put to bed within half an hour iirc, Mike Sheron and and Rick Holden scoring before Garry Flitcroft and Niall Quinn gave the scoreline something of a more realistic look. As a 10 year old lad looking on from the Tilehurst End I can remember that City looked a much much better side than us.

93/94 I wasn't at either League Cup game, but a 1-1 draw courtesy of Lovell's volley gave us a deserved share of the spoils, and irony of ironies, I was only talking to floyd after the Stevenage game and noted how we came away from that game feeling utterly robbed and that's how Stevenage will feel. Reading, better side, lost 2-1, 6'6" Hislop being lobbed from the edge of the area by a header from Quinn.

We may have met, Victor, but it's unlikely as there were more than 1000 on the train. You're right about that City team - they were one of, if not the best I've ever seen against us. I remember in the opening few minutes they missed a sitter by blasting it over the bar and I shouted 'You're rubbish', or words to that effect. My mate, who was a bit more experienced in watching football, said that they weren't and that we would lose the game heavily.

In spit of th result, I felt privileged to have watched that team live.
