"Chairman Sir John Madejski insists Football League must introduce salary cap"

Big match today and here comes the Madejski way

By Duncan White 10:30PM GMT 12 Mar 2011
With Reading away to Manchester City today in an FA Cup quarter-final, Madejski fears the enormous wages being paid in the Premier League are putting other clubs’ future in jeopardy by driving up salaries further down the league structure.

Madejski said that football was “imploding” but hopes that, by taking action, clubs in the lower tiers can save themselves. “I have been here 20 years and all I have seen is the inextricable rise in players’ wages,” he said. “I always thought the bubble would burst and common sense would prevail. It may just happen now.”

The Football League clubs will meet in Cyprus in June for their AGM, at which Madejski will lead calls for the clubs to limit spending to a percentage of their income.

“Anything that reduces wages is to be applauded,” he said. “On a league level the owners are realising, out of necessity, that something has to be achieved. If we don’t, we know what will happen. We have seen the warning signs. A lot of clubs are on the brink, a lot will disappear.

“It is vital that we tackle this problem and we are on the cusp of sorting it out. Football has to live within the confines of what it has. It cannot keep living beyond its means.”

Coming from a bloke who disappears out the country tax dodging thats rich !

Which ever way you look at it, he never wants us to be a Bolton, Fulham, Wigan or any other 24000 gate long standing Prem club because…………… he hates the game because wages.

Wage cap Madejski, yea good luck on that one 5 years on you’ve got no further on that issue other than our club is still in the Championship.

Where did all that Siggy money go John, on your wages ?

Mad man is now Jimmy Hill

I think he is right in what he says - and his view is widely acknowledged.

Bit shocked the football league thinks it is appropriate to go to cyprus for agm - surely that makes them hypocrites if they are discussing overspending!!

Agreed, Cyprus whats the link there ??? waste of money a bit like someone spendng millions on a hotel and penthouse not being able to fill it and then ask a club nearby to prop it up.

Funny lot pro sports team owners, they're the ones that run around like idiots throwing money around aimlessly and then blaming the players because salaries are too high.

Drifting away from football (but only for a minute) Tom Hicks threw a 10 year $250 million US contract at Alex Rodriguez a number of years ago, when no other teams were in the bidding at that rate. Closest contract to that one according to rumour was $180 million US.

Hicks owned the Dallas Stars (up for sale) in hockey, Texas Rangers (since sold) in major league baseball and (bringing it back to football) Liverpool, which he's since divested himself of. George Gillett, the other half of the Liverpool duo, also had to sell off the Montreal Canadians storied franchise in hockey.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

Not paying taxes is one of the perks of being in the economic class he is in...

But he is right in a sense the money being thrown around in football is crazy. Salary caps, and also revenue sharing fwiw, have mixed results when tried in other sports. In the NFL it has made the league much more competitive. But in MLB you still have the big market, high spending teams having a monopoly on championships. What is in place in English football currently isn't really conducive to the overall health of the game. Plus, as an aside, it think it hurts the development of English football internationally. A lot of money would be better spent on development of young talent, the future generation of your national team players. Granted this is coming from a fan of a national team which has accomplished very little, other than defeating Spain in the last Confed Cup and ending their record breaking winning streak, but English football has really kinda underperformed on the international scene. How many world cups for the birthplace of the game? How many times even to the semis?

I believe reform would be good for the overall strength of the game in the UK and England. But how to do that with all that big money being on the line is the tough part.

Thanks for posting that Tamworth.

It is really good to see our Chairman leading the way. He is, and has long been, a beacon of common sense in a game full of gamblers and chancers.

Spot on.

The likes of Tamworth deserve our pity for seeing that article as confirmation of a view our Chairman has never expressed rather than a financial reality check, which does little more than state the blindingly obvious..........................live within your means or go broke.

Yes J M is spot on he has been right to highlight these points about wages for many years . The problem is that clubs up and down the country are being put at risk . The plain fact is that all the money is and has been for a long time now going directly to the players and their greedy agents. The clubs are loosing money week in week out. You cant blame the players for trying to earn as much as they can and agents hate them as much as we do its their job to get the most amount of money they can. So to change this situation there will have to be some sort of regulation

This change will have to be forced from the FA. If this situation is not sorted out soon you will be seeing many clubs disappearing . (There are many Plymouths that haven't surfaced yet) The FA MUST REALISE THAT THESE CLUBS ARE THE LIFE BLOOD OF COMMUNITIES THAT WOULD HAVE HELPED START THEM UP IN THE FIRST PLACE! . SO SKY THE PLAYERS AND AGENTS GET MOST OF THE MONEY AND THE CLUBS ARE LEFT WITH VERY LITTLE. Good for you JM. Take SKY's money but cap wages so clubs can survive and football communities will still be able to support their historic teams and oh yes the knock on effect could be that the average hardworking football fan may be able to afford to take his children to games. These children are the fans of the future and should not be priced out of going to games because clubs can not afford to have reasonable admission prices because the players wages are too high ! Rant over !

Like Bolton?

You want us to put ourselves £90M in debt (and rising) to get in and stay in the premier league?

The problem is the wages to turnover ratio. When Man City is something like 105% and Bristol City are something like 120% then without somebody bankrolling the club it will go bust.

There needs to be some financial sense, but I don't think a wage cap is the best answer.

Wycombe, I think if you do a bit of reseach, you will find that JM went to live in the Far East for 18 months at the time he sold Auto Trader to 'minimise his tax exposure' in the UK. I would imagine that is what Tamworth is referring to.

^^^ this.

Madejski is spot on here. If the football league make this happen and then make it work, maybe just maybe top leagues will follow suit in time. The game needs it!

12/13 I think. We hadn't long moved into the Madstad, were facing relegation to L2 and then a load of East Standers stayed behind calling for him to come out and answer questions. We were told he was abroad still and may as well go home... :?:
