Goodbye to Ivar

Ivar Ingimarsson in two words: consummate professional. A typical Reading legend - a completely uninspiring, non-descript signing of an up until then journeyman player, a somewhat quiet signing, and he turns out to be probably the most consistent man ever to pull on the hoops. His partnership with Sonko was truly outstanding at this level, and with two superb full backs by their sides it comes as no surprise that he formed part of the defensive bedrock of the best side the country has seen relatively. Many a fine moment from the man: his equalisers against Ipswich and Swansea, his cross for Sidwell's equaliser against Middlesbrough, his header against Manchester City, but what I remember most about the man is his four or five Bobby Moore-like challenges on the edge of the area. Time and again he pulled this off, clean as a whistle, waiting...waiting...waiti...now, snap, ball's gone. His personality also spoke volumes about the man - quiet, unassuming, never complained, just got on with his job. A pity the majority of players these days can't be like him. Not just a credit to all of his clubs but a credit to the sport of football. One of few players who will get a standing ovation at the Madejski should he return.

Will never forget little details like when you got knocked out heading in that goal against Man City. "Did I score?"... Good times. You will be one of those players, along with Phil Parkinson that I one day tell my kids about.



PS... It really is becoming quite sad, who do we have left from the 106 team that made an appearance that year? Putting aside they might go... Long, Federici... ?

At the present moment, Long and Gunnarsson. It is entirely conceivable that the last vestiges of the 05/06 squad will depart this summer however.

Genuinely one of the best defenders I have ever seen and clearly a superb chap as well. His time with us has been drawing to a close for a while and he hasn't been the same player we all fell in love with for a season or so, but he was always reliable even on the wain.

A player and person I will always have the highest admiration and respect for, I wish him all the best wherever he goes and would happily see him back here in a coaching or managerial role in the future. You could definitely say Ivar played the right way.

Love this. This pic encapsulates the invincibility of the 05/06 side and is possibly my favourite Ivar moment. This was the first time that season that the 'we are unbeatable' chant rang out from the Reading fans and was prompted by this goal which ultimately sealed yet another win. I will remember that goal forever. I was sat in the front row of the top tier and Ivar was stood stationary square with where I was sat as the ball was placed for the corner-kick. My eyes followed him as darted, he his man, connected sweetly and put us into a 2-1 lead. The celebrations were loud and long but my own were rather truncated as the bloke next to me decided to celebrate by dancing precariously on the ledge of the top tier with many hundreds celebrating below him .

Ivar, simply a thank you for being one of our best ever players.

That Ivar goal v QPR was on bonfire night, that game really does stick in the memory, one of my favourite away days. In fact quite a few of Ivar's goals have stuck in my memory. Late goal v Swansea then late goal v Ipswich the week after. The one against Man City too in the Premiership.

Yes, the sense that we are losing our final links with those amazing times certainly brings a lump to the throat and that picture of Ivar & Kits brings it all flooding back; Players from the lower leagues who went largely unnoticed by the gloryhunters, yet wiped the floor with all their Championship rivals before finishing 8th in the Premiership.

If I live to 100 I don't expect to see two seasons that will compare and it was the spirit and professionalism of players like Ivar Ingimarsson that turned the highly unlikely into reality.

As one of those who will never be forgotten, many, many thanks and very best wishes for the future.

It is always sad when a great professional leaves the club and this is no exception, but I believe it was the right thing to do. Ivar will have no problem securing a contract with another club and will get first team football, something he was unlikely to get with us next season.

We had his best years and he will go down as one of the best defenders to ever grace our club and rightly so. Maybe if he hadn't suffered so many injuries in the last few years things may have been different, but he made a huge contribution to the club in our most successful period to date and I thank him for that. I wish him luck wherever he ends up.

Ivar getting injured two seasons ago probally cost us promotion, his leadship skills are second to none, a great Coppell signing.

Ivar will be an assest to a League 1 club who want to improve defensivly.
