Least we have some more centre back cover, can't be much worst than existing options

In his 6 matches for Preston last season they let in 10 goals. However 4 of those goals came in his last appearance when he went off injured in the 42nd minute and the first goal went in on 42 minutes.

So his record there was pretty good.

Hoop Blah Their are no similarities between the Legiertwood deal and this guy potentially siting with us though.

If you want deals to compare it to then you need to look at the likes of Lee, Upson and Bertrand. I can't think of one young and supposedly improving top flight 'youngster' we've taken on loan and then ended up signing (Harper and Sidwell did go out on loan to other clubs but they were teenage youth products as opposed to recent international signings for a seven figure sum).

although, looking at spurs' squad, and what harry said, its by no means certain that spurs will give him another contract/put him anywhere near the 1st team squad, so we may have some chance.

Shouldn't this thread be in UR&G until it's on the OS? Have heard somewhere that Pompey have come in at the last minute ....

We may well have a chance yes, but it's still a completely different scenario to getting an unwanted experienced pro in from a side in the same division with a view to a perm deal.

The lad has only been with Spurs for 6 months, a couple of them during the close season and a month or so more out on loan to Preston. He might have a long term future with Spurs or he might not. It's all a bit early to tell so far.

Surely it's better to have a young, and hopefully improving, player for a season who already has World Cup experience rather than a seasoned pro deemed not good enough to make the grade at Spurs.

Like Bertrand before him, this guy seems perfect for our level now but could be way out of our league in 12 months time unless we're promoted. Providing our share of his wages is sensible, this is a cost effective means of strengthening the squad and one that might not have been open to us without the improving record of our academy.

We should also consider the age of Pearce and Morrisson. Short term fixes could be effective simply to take a little pressure off them and allow them to develop into players capable of replacing Khumalo themselves in the long term. In which case it will simply be the case of bringing in a new Morrisson (or Sonko ala 2004) to fill that role. Very much the Reading way.

Although he will be a good signing, i just hope he "feels" something for the club, rather than thinking he is just doing us a favour.........we need him to come in and be part of the squad and be disappointed when we lose/concede etc - rather than shrugging his shoulders and picking up his X grand a week pay packet.

Isn't that part of the reason we always seem to take an age to sign players as both Heston and NH say the player has to be of the right mentality so that he fits in with the team here, thus they check players over several times and look to see what personality they are as much as possible - so hopefully that won't be an issue.

All depends on the player really.

Bertrand was in the same category but always gave 100%. If a younger player wants to prove themselves to their parent club what better way than by impressing on loan. Bertrand has done well on a series of loans and has now earned a new long term contract at Chelsea.

Having said that I would still have preferred that we buy an experienced Championship CB to replace Mills (say Chambers) - with possibly Sonko as cover.

I'm sure that Khumalo will want to prove that he can play in Europe. He hasn't been given the chance with Spurs that he was promised, and should look to impress while playing for us. I don't expect him to stay past this season, but I do think he'll give it his all.

I don't class 24 being in the young category.

Defender peak a little later than most players, i'd say he's still young
