Re: Shane Long off to West Brom

by KC Royal » 08 Aug 2011 18:57

Sarah Star Looked like a man who was off soon on Saturday. Can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe it was all the applauding the crowd and giving his shirt away... not that he hasn't done that before a few times.

Agreed. When he walked towards the tunnel he looked pretty dejected and immediately my good spirits from the game evaporated :( McDermott sounded pretty down on the radio afterwards too, as if he knew something, to the extent that I expected Tim Dellor to say something about Long's situation.

That said, always expected the Millwall game to be the last time i saw him play. That was the last live game i'll see until at least mid-September and have thought for a few weeks now that this week was the most likely time for him to go.

Assuming this move goes through will be sad to see him go naturally, but glad he's going to a decent PL club with a decent manager. West Brom should be fine this season too so that'l be at least 2 seasons of PL football for him. As someone who's always wanted him to succeed i hope he's a success and proves the doubters wrong, as from speaking to various people about him 2 months ago, mainly fans of PL sides, they didn't think he was a PL player. Needless to say i disagreed!

As for where this leaves us, 6m is pretty good business, but considering i rate him at 5m and Hammond generally does good deals for players when they move on I was hoping for more. I can see Manset and Hunt getting 15 more goals between them than they scored last season, so all we need is a striker capable of getting double figures. Hopefully that will be possible one way or the other (ie loan or permanent)...

Hadn't even considered we may strengthen in other areas, so anything else would be a bonus.

i'm sure there will be a sizable sell on % attached to a deal of £6m. reading could us the fact that west ham and leicester have offered so much more as a bargaining tool. it's very good business indeed, but there has to be a striker coming in who has something about him, otherwise we're in real trouble this season.

CayeneMatt He was on the pitch for a good 2 minutes after everyone else had left. I was only there cos my Mrs wanted a piccy of him on her iphone (she's Irish).

He meandered over to the North stand, shirt in hand, then meandered back to the tunnel (in to the waiting arms of Hammond). Me and everyone else around, well, those that were left plus my Mrs waving her iphone at him all felt that was his last time. His body language said it all. End of.

Good post. When walking down the stairs in the East, there was a guy behind me who clocked him and said straight away "oh no, he's gone". It was only then that i clocked what was going on.

Yay. this should now pave the way for Reading to move for an inexperienced defender we've never heard of on a free transfer.

Nothing like immediately spelling out the ambition of the club to fans of the club and rekindling their dwindling interest in attending home games.

Is there a course to go on in order that you can spout rubbish that isn't fact based?

McDermott said he was working on a signing last week. Sonko isn't signing, so it's a good bet that it's a central defender, and it needs to be.

If Long goes then we also need a striker, but let's not get carried away

It's Upson ;-)

Seriously though, with the lack of a transfer fee for Upson, surely we could afford a few more pounds per week...?

Let's just say for example we were willing to pay him £20k a week, because he is worth it. And we would have been willing to pay a million for a centre half. Could we not just pay him £40k a week, knowing that we don't have to pay a fee?

Shane Long has almost certainly signed for West Brom for a fee between £6-£7million. I think we should buy a new striker...Adam La fondre, Matt Tubbs, Danny Ings. All cheap buys and with £12million coming in from two sells Sir Mad has found another black hole. We need a new LB Harte is too slow, Griffin is old but will be replaced by Cummings, Pearce scares me when he has the ball so we should buy Matty Upson.

So you are only giving him a one year deal and no signing on fee then..........

Let's pray it is Upson! I loved watching him last time he played for us, but I can't see it happening due to wages. And rightfully so, why break the bank on a player who is probably looking for his last big contract if we can fund a couple of players who will have a bigger impact overall for a longer period of time, or have future sales income with them, which Upson probably wont?

Nonetheless..... Sign him up!!

No.
When Upson is outplayed by Kebe, Pearce, Federici, Karacan and all the other superstars, they will also want £2 million a year.
