New Keeper - Stuart Moore

by strap » 10 Oct 2011 14:40

Anyone know anything about the signing of a new Academy Keeper, Stuart Moore from Portsmouth. This from NonLeagueDaily.com:

"Stuart Moore, brother of Brentford goalkeeper and former stopper at Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division club Brading Town, Simon Moore, has followed in his brother’s footsteps after signing professional forms with Championship side Reading.

Stuart is a former Brading ‘Colts’ goalkeeper, having played for Steve Lawton’s Colts team from Under 11s through to Under 15s before joining Portsmouth.

He spent several years at Fratton Park before signing for the Royals on a two-year apprenticeship followed by a one-year professional deal.

His first competitive game came this week when he was loaned to Hungerford Town, to help solve their goalkeeping crisis. "

Checking out the Hungerford website looks as though he's 17 and played in both FACQ3 games v Weymouth. Seems odd that we are signing yet another young keeper.

By my recokoning that menas we have, (in order of seniority):

Adam Federici
Alex McCarthy
Mikkel Anderson
Simon Locke
Daniel Santangelo
?? Henly
Stuart Moore

Given we've just allowed Ben Hamer to move on, we still have at least 7 keeprs of variouls levels at the club.

I think it is Dean Santangelo and Jonathan Henly - they have both been winners of the Steve Death trophy for Academy goalkeepers. I was lucky enough to present it to them and Dean towered over me then. The winner last season was (at last) smaller than me but that is because he is very very young.

Bit off topic.

Tom Cleverley was from Basingstoke. How didn't we pick him up? Isn't there a rule that states that under-16 players, can only join clubs that are within an hour of where they reside.

He grew up in Bradford so probably a bit off our radar.

I think players can go to any clubs academy as long as it's within an hour and a half of their home. There is a loop hole where satellite academy's can be set up but I'm not sure on the extent of these.

A Bradford based one?

I do think we're better placed to hold on to local talent now as opposed to 15 years ago but I do still hear of parents prefering Southamptons set up to ours (it always used to be them and Palace).

His big brother is a pretty good keeper!

Good that he will have some competition as the Isle Of Wight's number 1 keeper

More than any other position goalkeepers thrive on competition so the more the merrier. Maybe we have a long-term plan to be the UK's leading specialist goalkeeping academy!

Without a keeper we are sure to give up a load of goals.

Good move imo...

“We’ve got young Stuart who is a big prospect,” said Reading’s boss, who is still waiting on the green light from Thailand to begin his summer shopping spree. “We want to try and push Stuart a little bit this year. So we do have a young goalkeeper in place"

Funny to think that 4 years ago we were mystified at why we would sign a 7th choice keeper. Has anyone seen Stuart Moore play at all? Can he make it at this level?

They liked him @ Basingstoke Town last season...

Stuart was on loan at Basingstoke from Reading for the 2014/15 season. The young goalkeeper quickly established himself as a key player as he helped the club qualify for the Conference South Play-Offs. His contribution was recognised as he was awarded both the Supporters Player of the Season and Away Fans Player of the Season awards.

He is the younger brother of Football League goalkeeper Simon who had also previously spent time on loan at The Camrose.

Jason Bristow's dad works for me, - talking to him, they rate Stuart very highly...
