Reading striker Jason Roberts is targeting his first Championship title after the Royals' victory over Southampton on Friday night.
"After what happened last season in the play-offs it is a very motivated bunch. So they're ready to get to the next level now."
Roberts has twice been promoted to the Premier League - with Wigan and West Brom - but has never topped the Championship.
But Reading are now in pole position to take the title after replacing Southampton at the summit of the table with a 3-1 victory over their rivals at St Mary's stadium.
The Royals are now three points clear with three matches remaining and hours after scoring one of Reading's goals, Roberts told Soccer AM that they will take one step at a time in order to achieve their ultimate goal of winning the league.
"I have been promoted twice but never won the league so that is something we will be looking at," he said.
"They played well and had a lot of the ball. But the way we play is efficient. We know how to win games and stay in games when things are not going well. It was a very good day at the office.
"The only thing we think about are the three points on offer. That is all you can do. You don't get six points for winning the game. These six pointers are a bit of a cliché.
"It is all about getting the three points that you can get and that is what we have been doing time after time.
"After what happened last season in the play-offs it is a very motivated bunch. So they're ready to get to the next level now."
While Roberts is focused on the short-term, he is confident that should the Royals secure promotion their current team is strong enough to form the backbone of a squad that can survive in the Premier League.
"When I went up with Wigan we did not add much and had a fantastic season coming 10th, now Swansea are doing that," he said. "Certainly I believe the guys in this squad are good enough to go up but first of all we have to get up there and then worry about that."
Roberts has scored six goals in 15 appearances since joining from Blackburn in January and is determined to continue playing for as long as possible - potentially staying with the Royals for the rest of his career.
"They have been fantastic since the first five or six games of the season and you like to think that you add something and I have certainly enjoyed it," he said. "I'd like to think that I have added something but no it is not 100 per cent down to me.
"We stayed up on the last day of the season at Wolves with Blackburn, which was a fantastic day. It was like winning in the play-off final for us and hopefully I will be celebrating again at the end of the season.
"I am only 34 and I think that I have got some more football in me but it would be nice (to finish career at Reading). If I was to finish my career there it would mean I am doing well and we've been successful and that would be great."
