Brian McDermott long serving manager

by andrew1957 » 14 May 2012 17:01

In the mad world of football with fans and club owners wanting instant success the length of time a manager survives is ever reducing (unless you are Ferguson or Wenger). Over the 92 clubs the length of survival is now little more than a year.

Brian has been manager here for 2 year 150 days and is now the 19th longest serving manager across the 92 clubs. With a fair few of those above him tipped to move on this summer, he could be even higher placed by August.

Surely it is about time club's learned that patience and stability give dividends in the longer run……..but then again probably not.

A good point which raises it's head every now and then. Agree, a lot of clubs would do well to follow the lead that we have set. Since Madejski bought the club we have had 9 managers. Take away the genuine mistakes that were Bullivant and Rodgers (9 months and 6 months respectively) as well as the short lived Porterfield spell under Madejski, the average length of tenure managers at Reading get is 3.5 years. Just goes to prove that at this club if you're any good you'll get the longevity you need to build a respectable team.

He's also the 23rd oldest of the 92. So much for being a young 'un

I read somewhere the other day that the joke club that is West Ham, had 5 managers between 1901 and 1989............Chelsea can do that in a year. Mind you Chelsea have a much bigger trophy cabinet, including three titles in recent years, God know how many FA Cups and two European cup finals............

Sometimes an appointment doesn't work out so a manager has to move on, sometimes a manager needs more time.

How do you tell the difference?

Stage 1 is not to set unrealistic expectations on performance if you are forcing wholesale changes of playing staff or playing style on a manager.

When there isn't enough time (Rogers) the outcome is the same regardless.

Taking Man Utd and Sir Alex Fergusson as the benchmark (1986), I'd like to see how many managers we've had in that time compared to the rest of the league.

Excluding caretakers, I make it 9 (I'm counting Quinn and Gooding as one). An average of 2.8 years per manager.

Brian McDermott 2009-present
Brendan Rodgers 2009-09
Steve Coppell 2003-09
Alan Pardew 1999-03
Tommy Burns 1998-99
Terry Bullivant 1997-98
Jimmy Quinn & Mick Gooding 1995-97
Mark McGhee 1991-94
Ian Porterfield 1989-91
Ian Branfoot 1984-89

I'm sure I read something in Four Four Two that said Madjeski holds onto managers for longer than any other chairman in the football league.

Its only 12 going back to 1970 when I started supporting - just Jack Mansell, Charlie Hurley and Maurice Evans to add to above.

I think the way SJM runs the Club allows him to have more patience than many other Clubs who are gambling their future every season. Also think that in general he appoints Managers who will go along with his financial philosophy and can deal with what must be the frustration of losing the best players most seasons.

I strongly believe that a successful team is built over two or three seasons at least and changing managers doesn't help that, although sometimes it is the right move. Usually the the team is built by keeping your best players and adding to that so the fact that McDermott has lost Sigurdsson and Long in particular over the last two years makes his achievement all the more remarkable.
