Royal Bahamas Reading -v- Arsenal at Highbury, in the mid 60's. We lost the game, but it was magic to be there, and see RFC playing such a dominant team, as Arsenal were in those days. I know there are other Hob Nobbers who were there that night. Colin Meldrum fired a shot at Goal from his own half, and hit the bar! Awesome! The atmosphere was amazing......

Lost 1-0 and the coach had its window smashed - just wait for the other 400,000 that were at the game to show up.

Jackson Corner
Pete10
Tony Le Mesmer Any game from the start of the 85/86 season. There isnt any TV footage of the record run due to some strike, so being able to relive that would be pretty special. Preferably the Wolves game where we didnt make it 14, just so i can go back & see how many people REALLY were in the ground that night!

Nearly 20 thousand in the place that night.

Easy, Like the Simod semi. I would like to know one day if the real gates for those games will be known. Post Hysel the capacity was supposed to be 15,000. Both those games you could hardly breathe the place was so packed.

I think the 'imaginary offical attendance' that night had more to do with FD Mike Lewis' "creative accounting" - allegedly - than safety restrictions. Rumour was he used to take home the gate receipts to 'safely count in his front room' (as with many other games that season). Nothing untoward about that and any subsequent prosecution he might have had for fraud resulting in imprisonment whilst a Director at Exeter City is also purely circumstantial.

Ark Royal
blythspartan I have seen some really great Reading games over the last 40 years and also many dire games as well. There are lots of games I would love to see again like the second leg of the play off semi final against Wigan. However, If I could only choose one game to re-live it would be in the 1978/79 season when we beat Grimsby 4-0 at Elm Park and I am sure that John Alexander scored all 4 goals. That game made a great impression on me as a young Reading fan. What would be the one game that you would love to re-live?

Some photos to add to your memories:

John Alexander is now some bigwig in corporate circles behind the scenes at Man U is he not?

Doncaster 7 Reading 5 - 82/83 season

Because it was the only game I missed that season, due to a mate persuading me to go to Cambridge v Carlisle instead as he hadn't been to Cambridge's ground before.

I remember being stood on the terrace at Cambridge watching a dire match (1:1 draw I think) whilst listening to the radio and all the goals being banged in at Donny. Nearly killed my mate that day.

Reading 3 Palace 2 was the one of the most entertaining matches I have ever seen, let alone Reading game. Incredible game, great atmosphere, beautiful football played by both sides - and at 1,000 miles an hour!!

Ark Royal Reading 3 Orient 2 69/70. Jack Mansell's wonderful passing team at its finest.
Reading 5 Tranmere 0 75/76. At last, a BIG performance against big rivals and THE goal.
Reading 4 Chesterfield 2 85/86. A hat-trick by God, an all-out assault on the Chesterfield goal, 25 corners to their 1!
Reading 2 Wolves 2 85/86. Despite not making it 14, an absolutely packed, rabid Elm Park made it a night to remember.
Reading 4 Plymouth 3 85/86. THE comeback and an excuse to tell the bloke in front of me on the Tilehurst End to stay and watch the last 25 minutes despite being 0-3 down.
Tranmere 1 Reading 3 94/95. The most perfect and clinical performance I had ever witnessed.
Reading 4 Wolves 2 94/95. WERE you watching, Mark McGhee?

Brilliant shout. Saw them all bar the Orient game.

Just need to add;
The Coventry Simod Cup semi final - the Southbank was rammed.
Southampton at home, 1978, League Cup. Southbank packed an hour before kick off.
Aldershot away, numerous times late 70s and early 80s. The feeling of a packed train of RFC piling into their town centre, having a few issues, then doubling the crowd at their park.
Wycombe away in the FA Cup late 1976. Beat them 2-1. Friday 2 goals. Good feisty day out.

I'd take Southampton away from last season, minus half of the Magners cider factory output, and the lack of ability to remember anything at all....

There are of course many others.

Peterborough away - 1-0 down until the last minute (I think)- enter Darius Henderson - 2 goals in 2 minutes....what a racket!

Brizzle City away - 3-3 draw - I've never heard us make such a noise, before or since if I'm honest.

Luton at home in 1993? - my first game alone - I was so pleased as a 12 year old to be out with my mates without any grown ups there, I missed most of the game messing about (in reality, my uncle was watching me from the back of the stand, but I didn't know that at the time!)

Reading 0 - Arsenal 4

Probably the best football I've ever watched live.

Watched this from the Barnsley end because I was late getting to EP. Didn't Gary Heale score a hat-trick?

Never Again - Reading 0 Chesterfield 0 - I think it was our lowest ever attendance circa 1983... rained all the way through and a truly shocking game.

Definately Again - Southampton 1 Reading 3 - But this time sitting with the Reading Fans.

Probably the Middlesbrough Coca Cola cup quarter final. Sure we lost in the end but it was a close run thing, and I was young enough that I hadn't grown out of football at the time.

I'd probably say that four-niller we had against Aldershot at home circa late 70s, think it was a bank holiday Monday and big crowd around 15k. That was just heaven on earth for a 16-year old as I was at the time.

That would have been 16th April 1979. Overhead kick by Ollie Kearns!

That's not really an overhead by Ollie tbf. He more sort of fell into it by the looks of it.

What a day that was. Remember it clear as anything which isn't bad considering it was 33 years ago.

I remember that fat beardy Aldershot player stood on the goal line, can't remember his name though. Also, is that Youlden playing number five for the Shots that day?

Good old Ollie. Just as likely to smash one in from thirty yards or clear the Tilehurst End from a yard out.

Yes, that is Tommy Youlden wearing 5 for the Shite. Aldershot: the place where old Royals go to die.

Can't recall the guy on the line. The keeper is Glen Johnson.
