3 veesinarowCaskeys Lovechild Only after Hillsborough did it take on a new meaning, and become a Liverpool anthem, as other clubs backed off and let them take it as their own.
Whilst other clubs around the world have used and adopted the song, this statement is incorrect. Play it to any football fan around the world and ask them what club it reminds them of - the vast majorIty will say LFC. It did not become a Liverpool anthem after Hillsborough, plain and simple, it already was.
It very much became a "Liverpool only" song in England post Hillsborough....whilst it was their anthem, it was also used by other clubs - Utd, Forest, Bradford - indeed, it had even been used to raise money to support victims of the Bradford Fire.....
What you say about it reminding football fans of Liverpool is correct - but if you'd asked the same people 25 years ago, some would have said LFC, some Utd, some Celtic, some Bradford, some other smaller clubs. Now, it is a "sacred" anthem, which is very much Liverpools, in England at least - that is a result of the "new meaning" that it took on, post the events of 15th April 1989.
