Big Ern There are no positives. We lost and looked terrible again. The lack of quality in the tean is painfully obvious and unless we spend 30million plus in January (which we won't) we will finish bottom of this league by quite a margin. I have yet to see 1 team worse than us in this division let alone 3. We have pretty much zero hope of staying up.

agreed

but do we have 30 million?

if you had 30 million would you gamble on throwing it down the drain like that?

i bloody wouldnt

The only positive I can take from the game last night was that the bar in the designated "away fans' pub" was empty and easy to get a seat and a beer in.

Its not McDermott's fault he can't manage higher profile players like Pog and Guthrie, after all he learnt much of his trade off Coppell, the master of getting the best out a poor bunch, and he worked under Madejski, a penny pincher (nothing wrong with that by the way).

If we want to stay up this season, and progress next, (to be honest i can't stand the Premier League so im not too fussed whether we do or not), then its glaringly obvious McDermott is not our man. Harsh but fair in the circumstances with a new owner with money. The fact he is not playing his two new signings, the best passer and the top goalscorer shows that he is not upto a premier league job.

The sole positive was Eric Lichaj's Movember

SCIAG Positives:
Best performance of the season from a Reading right back
Tabb had possibly his best ever game for us
Shorey played well
No Gorkss, and both centre backs did well.

Negatives:
No creativity
We made Villa look like Swansea.

I agree with most of this. Thought we played ok until half-time. Doesn't mean I don't think McD should be sacked though.

Wizard Thought the defence was pretty solid. Other than the goal and Weimann blasting way over, Villa didn't really carve through us like Wigan did.

That's my positive.

Also agree with this, thought that the back four looked very good at times in the first half.

The problem is clearly the midfield and the long balls.

The only positive was Pearce back in the 18.

We didn't lose a lead and we're not bottom. Celebrate good times, come on.

I'll have a pint of McDermott's home brew please.

Latest SkySports interview sounded more like Captain Mannering was at the Helm, "When I took this job three years ago we were second from bottom in the Championship, trying to stay in it. The following year we lost Gylfi Sigurdsson, the summer after that we lost Shane Long.

"When you think of all of those things, if you look at it, we are in a great situation."

By the same reasoning a retired fisherman with no legs is in a better position than when working, as at least this winter he will be sitting in the warmth of his own urine tucked up in bed, and not out at sea froze and wet.

It would be better all round if we just had some honest interviews along the lines of "Guthrie was suspended for being an idiot and will be back in 4 weeks, and I play Gorks because I love him, no matter what."

Whichever way you look at it he's not. We may be in a better situation than we were but we very definitely are not in a great situation and if we don't turn things around pdq, we will be back where we were. As Alexander pointed out in another thread, if we go down we can wave goodbye to all our young up and coming talent again (e.g. the likes of McCarthy and Morrison). Regardless of whether AZ can and wants to pay them big money (and someone clearly doesn't want to pay Pearce), their heads will be turned by advances from PL teams.

Talking of great situations is the last thing we need at present - it has a tendency to lead to/increase complacency.

Cringeworthy - performance, tactics, interview.
Still, no worries, McD said it wasn't a must win game and we move on!

"Gylfi, Sidders, come back and play for us. We have a plan. It involves being creative in midfield like the old days. You know where we don't rely on unreliable/sicknote 'wingers' to cross once or twice a game. It will save us from relying on the odd freekick and penalties.

Hoofing it down the channels unfortunately doesn't work anymore now that Shane has gone.

No we haven't got Doyler, Kits or Lita to run onto your precision passes but we now have Jase - ok his legs may have gone a bit, or Alfie, you know did great guns for Rotherham..... yeah you know Div 2 and the gobshite Irish midget Hunt instead.

PLUS waiting in the wings, Sheppard (lightning in Irish Sunday League, now doing great guns at Accrington Stanley) and Brett, um, whatshisface.

Oh the Pog?! Yeah he did fab for Fulham for 5 minutes last year and scored against Chelsea with a header from a cross that was harder to miss (albeit from open play! GASP!)"

There. Job done.
