Daniel Carrico Signs for RFC

by Sir Dodger Royal » 31 Dec 2012 17:42

From Sporting Website:
Daniel Carrico Reading will represent the club in the Premier League. Former captain 'unfair' contract expired at the end of June 2013, having served Sporting a claim by the athlete moving to England in January.

The central defender arrived at Sporting in 2000/01 to join the roster of sub-13. Early started wearing the captain's armband, he became national champion and in 2008/09 squad reached the professional club, after having been on loan for one season (2007/08), Olhanense and AEL Limassol .

At the time of parting, Daniel Carrico left a message to Sporting.

"Dear Sporting, partners and friends,
It is with mixed emotions that I write this farewell message. I'm leaving the club in my heart, where I had the privilege of graduating and serving for several years. I leave because I understand that I am a stage career in which I have to take chances. Moreover, the proposed project is extremely exciting to me and know I can succeed. I know my output does not affect the normal operation of the Club and to which I hope one day to return. I wish the Sporting Clube de Portugal to return to winning ways quickly and I ask you also, as captain, to continue to support the team, the club and its officers and employees. To all of you who supported me over the years, thank you very much, I'll take you with me in my heart.
Hug Daniel Carrico "

Sporting will receive 750,000 euros for the transfer of Daniel Carrico, being also secured a pass percentage of a future transfer.

I don't want to put a downer on it, but at 5'11" he's barely taller than mariappa.

How many shortarsed defenders do we want?

Reading have signed their first player of the January transfer window in the form of Portuguese defender Daniel Carrico according to reliable sources from Portugal.

The 24 year old has spent the past five years with Sporting Lisbon, where he has captained the side and has been linked to clubs such as Barcelona and both Manchester sides last season.

He can also be utilised in a defensive midfield position, due to his technique and distribution, which could mean Mikele Leigertwood to be finally displaced from the Reading side.

The details of the length of contract signed are still to be revealed, although he has joined for a fee of around £700,000 with a future sell on %. His contract in Portugal was due to end in June which has led to the nominal fee being paid to bring him to The Madejski Stadium in January.

Carrico was first revealed on The Football Family last week, and met with Chief Executive Nigel Howe last night with his agent to finalise the remaining details in his contract.

Reading will officially announce the deal tomorrow (January 1st) once the Transfer Window has officially opened

Help me understand how excited anyone should be with a guy who can't get a game this year for a below mid table Sporting Lisbon team? Is this cover for Mapps/Pearce/Morrison?

Views from a Sporting fan

He is originally a CB but during the last couple of seasons he was often used as a DM. He is a solid player and still has a lot of potential to be developed but don't expect any Beckenbauer skills.

I hope he is very successful with you although tbh I am quite pissed off that he is leaving for almost nothing after the club spent 10 years paying for his development in our academy, but that's the sad reality of our current board of incompetent directors.

Being billed by Reading as a midfielder so expect him to replace Legs in the 4-5-1

NR_Royal I still don't understand why he's coming to us.

Why aren't any bigger clubs interested, especially at that price when he was so sought after in the past? Why is he even leaving Sporting CP? This could be a brilliant signing. 8)

Just because they've looked at him in the past doesn't mean they've gone as far as wanting him then, let alone now.

Hopefully he can make the adjustment to the Premier League quickly and successfully. The last player we signed from Portugal was Cisse wasn't it? He struggled to cope with the pace and intensity in training let alone matches.

Odd one really as this isn't the experienced Premier League signing that McDermott has talked about.

Introduced as a Midfielder. Wonder if this means if THUD isn't coming or that was complete bs from the get go.

Granted no PL experience but he does have Champions League experience. That counts for something...

And he was his club's captain also. I very much like this signing.

Sounds a bit like the Pearce situation. His contract runs out soon so they probably weren't playing him unless they really had to. The fact he's their club captain at 24 suggests they rate him quite highly.

He'll play in a midfield 5. Seems a good signing and some intent by the club.

We'll have the best side in the championship next season. Just wish we had done this at the start od the season

He wasn't available at the start of the season.

We got him for a steal because of his contract situation.

I wonder if the fee we get for Church will be more than what we paid for him
