NR_Royal I still don't understand why he's coming to us.

Why aren't any bigger clubs interested, especially at that price when he was so sought after in the past? Why is he even leaving Sporting CP? This could be a brilliant signing. 8)

Just because they've looked at him in the past doesn't mean they've gone as far as wanting him then, let alone now.

Hopefully he can make the adjustment to the Premier League quickly and successfully. The last player we signed from Portugal was Cisse wasn't it? He struggled to cope with the pace and intensity in training let alone matches.

Odd one really as this isn't the experienced Premier League signing that McDermott has talked about.

This is a completely different signing as cisse wasn't an established player when he signed. I really don't believe this is Cisse mkII as this lad has been brought through an academy which plays a very skilled type of football.

As the video above will show you, it's not he pace of the prem that players usually need to adjust to. imo the Portuguese game is played at an equal, if not greater pace. You do need to be physically stronger at winning he ball in the prem. the perfect example of this was Cristano Ronaldo - another Sporting academy product.

Although lack of game time this season, an extremely good bit of business. Very pleased with this.

Welcome Daniel!

SSN remind us how ignorant and clueless they can be by highlighting the fact Carriço only cost 600k and that it's a bit colder over here.. Nothing about how he was getting rave reviews 12 months ago and was linked with some of the big boys. Instead it's a signing Reading fans should be worried about.

Well let's not get carried away. We haven't seen him play yet, he could misplace his first 50 passes and everyone here will suddenly hate him. Give it time.

This.

Sounds like a good signing on paper, but that is all. Also, if he was so cheap and being monitored by the likes of Citeh and Man United, why didn't someone else go for him?

I really hope he lives up to his reputation as we are crying out for a good central defender, however best to wait and see how he does.

Interesting one and on a free. Sounds a bit more likely than some of these rumours, and he was also linked with Fulham a while back, so us pinching their chief scout and then this might add up.

Daniel Carriço
Born: August 4, 1988 (age 24), Cascais
Height: 1.81m
Position: Central Defender

It seems Reading or Benfica are the two leading clubs in for him at the moment.

Is there a nobber behind that website?

Don't surprise me. Sky sports know nothing outside of the Premier league. They all have this in their head "The premier league is the best league in the world and no other league comes near it. If a player outside of England joins in they will not settle in."

I agree we need premier league experience but the players we would attract who have that are has beens and we will just turn out to be QPR 2.0. Rather us try and bring in "unknown" quality.

I have it good authority that the club employed Mick Gooding and Jimmy Quinn to show him the league table to convince he to come.

Not really RR, it's a very valid response to those who are using their reported past interest and price tag as a gauge for his quality. Usually any such paper talk is laughed off as agents touting their man around or lazy journalism. It's also worth remembering that the likes of Lambert, Darren Campbell, Simon Church and others have all been looked at by big clubs in the past too. It doesn't mean much about the quality of the player as they watch and enquire over lots of players.

Valid point actually. If the likes of Barca and the above mentioned clubs were 'linked' to him, I would have expexcted him, like most rational people to questionwhy he didn't get an offer from a bigger club than us.

You may not like to hear it, but there are actually bigger clubs in the world than Reading FC.

I'm sure there are games or parts of games that are just as quick and end to end, but Cisse was the one who said he struggled to adapt, and from the little bits of Portugese football I've watched (and it's not a lot) it's not been as consistently quick as the Premier League. It's no walking pace like Seria A but likewise I don't see it as consistently face paced as our league.

You're right it certainly seems its more the physical side of things that's the biggest difference though. Cisse found it a real struggle by all accounts but this lad should be a step up from him in quality, hopefully anyway!

Not really RR

As it's pantomime time, Oh Yes It Is!!!

This mentality is all part of the RFC Wrist Slitters Charter.

If the asking price was still £15m we wouldn't get a sniff even if we were prepared to break the bank.

Yet, having paid the Premiership equivalent of 2 sets of kit for a player with these credentials, we can always rely on some of the same fans who got trampled in the stampede to trash the signings of players such as Dave Kitson, to be here with their firemens hoses pooring cold water on it.

Hi Reading fans,

I'm benfiquista (Benfica fan) and I registered with the purpose of giving you my opinion regarding Carriço.

He was highly rated when younger, especially before making it to professional, when he was playing in Sporting's academy and under 18 national teams. He's one of the players that appeared in portuguese football after Quaresma, Ronaldo, etc (Rui Patrício, him, João Moutinho, Miguel Veloso, Nani, Yannick Djalo... some of the names).

However, he failed to continue developing as expected. His aerial ability isn't really that good, and I strongly doubt he can be that important in such a physical league like yours. He had some ok games as defensive midfielder last year, but then Sporting bought Gelson Fernandes (who was already loaned in December as well, quite mediocre player). In my opinion, in Sporting (the weakest Sporting in history, I believe) he could be a good backup to the main team, essentially as defensive midfielder. It's a strange business cause Sporting needs to restore its identity and sell some expensive players (Carriço isn't the case), but probably was the last chance to make some cash. And they desperately need it.

Some top players that went from Portugal to England in DC and MC positions are Ramires (pure class), David Luiz (same, but not too solid in his main task, which is to defend) and Javi Garcia (not as good as Ramires, but quite competitive and efficient if given the ability to tackle and make a short pass to someone with better skill on the ball). Expect not as much from Carriço. He can be a good player to have in the squad, and that's it. I would not play him CB, but who knows?... Maybe he can make something there.

His thread in Benfica forum:
http://serbenfiquista.com/forum/index.php?topic=51795.0

From page 39 to 41 is when he signs for Reading (soon after the thread is closed).

He can be a good backup (more or less, it depends on your squad and his ability to adapt to the Premier League). To be fair, it isn't easy to play in this Sporting, and signing Gelson was a strange piece of business to make. But do not expect a Ramires, Luiz or Javi Garcia, a player of this kind of caliber.

Edit: removed quotes.
