I think though that he, along with the rest of the club and supporters including almost everyone on here, has been guilty of spectacular naivety about the level of talent needed to play / stay at this level.

bennno Seems laughable now to look back at the summer when it was being muted that following the takeover we would be one of the richest clubs in Europe and people were bandying about names like Long, Siggurdson, Defoe and the like....
Yes, 7th Jan is 7 days in to the window, with West Brom and Newcastle games coming up. We should have been working on a solid right back, defence cover for Pearce or a new contract, a solid CDM and a decent forward.

Problem is, Reading fans moan about 'buying' success, now you're all moaning about them not spending enough. Make up your minds will you?

The Prisoner Infrastructure - maybe
Ambition - we are trying to run an Aston Martin on a Yugo budget

bennno Will 'the Reading way' of offering low, complex, structured, low waged payments for players accelerate our Premier League demise?
Sounds like Rogic has determined he is better off with less pressure in Aus whilst his club have commented on deal proposed, no appearance from Sunzu, no quick signings in. No Huddlestone, Arshavin appearances as muted, need them in now to help notch a couple of wins.
By comparison West Ham already have 3 in and arguably made a better fist in the summer, despite their massive debts and not being promoted till a lot later than Reading.....

Royalclapper Trouble is, it will be difficult to transform players who have - 'a good work ethic' - 'battle and scrap to stop other teams playing' - 'backs to the wall, and hit 'em on the counter' mentality which is completely ingrained, to something fit for 21st C football.
When McD says "we've come a long way", you could be excused for translating it into "this is as far as we're going to get with this side". Even after the inevitable relegation, the club will be mindful of the Rodgers era when the ideas in hindsight were probably right, it was the playing staff with the ability that was lacking. A slow introduction of a few who can play a bit would seem like the only affordable solution but even the championship is a long hard slog of a division to get out of, and promotion back will be difficult and certainly not guaranteed by a long way.
The Infrastructure does need constant attention, but the retail side of football is what happens on the pitch and therefore we need an improved product to sell if we are to compete at the higher end.
