Scutterbucketz How loud was it?

A little muted but respectful.

Did you think so, I was in y23 for yesterday's game and it was well respected there - the sound also seemed to get louder the minute went on.

It's of no surprise that the ones who didn't agree with this are from the disgusting generation of baby boomers. What a vile generation you lot are, it's a shame you vilify the kids today, they are too good for you and your 'wouldn't happen in my day'.

I'd rather have things like Saturday than the god awful neanderthal football fans we had in the 60/70/80s, GC you should be ashamed of yourself.

Y26 was sparse so perhaps it was just perception.

I think the other 89 minutes of silence were much more respectful for him.

Sorry you feel that way, Tails. I don't know how old you are, but I come from a generation who view certain things differently maybe....it's natural really.
I've nothing against any of the people we applaud or stay silent for. I'm not sure what the value of it is, who decides who is "worthy" of it , and who is not.
My feeling is it's linked to the celebrity culture and our worshipping of it. I'm probably not explaining myself properly, maybe someone else can.
Chris Armstrong is a good bloke and obviously, like many others, battling bravely against a horrible illness. I just feel we seem to put these people up on a pedestal unnecessarily. I'm sure he is very humbled by the applause, but a bit embarrassed. Are we applauding him because he was a great player for Reading or that he's bravely fighting MS? It's because he's bravely fighting MS and happened to be an average player for Reading..............I guess. There must be alot of ex-Reading players who have suffered since they left the club but you hear nothing of them. Did we clap or have a minutes silence when Dick Habbin died for instance? It's all or nothing for me. Not pick and choose.

I'd rather they came around with buckets collecting for the fight against MS than a token clap for someone who wasn't actually there.

I hope I'm not really that vile and disgusting......

HTH

Prepare for the onslaught.....................

(that's the most I've written in one post for ages. Need to go and lie down)

Pardon me if I fail to see the reason why we pay respects to those embroiled in either WW then.

It's an arbitrary line, which has been part of football as far back as the 1930s.

In a time when a lot of you older generations are critical of the widening gap between player, club and fans, something that fits outside the commercial interest yet still attracts a cold reception just indicates what kind of generation you lot are.

After reading the thread, I think the minutes applause did no harm - the players were behind it too, so I was happy to get involved.

However I'm sure we've done this before and I would not think it necessary to do this again unless perhaps if Chris Armstrong turns up at a game, in which case he'll get a round of applause anyway as an ex-player. It could also start a trend which could see us clapping though the entire game as we struggle to remember which squad numbers certain players wore or which numbers represent certain events.

With respect, people who died in the world wars are a little different to someone who happened to get ill.

Strangley, Old Biscuitman seems to have similar thoughts to me.

Yes, I'm just highlighting that its an arbitrary line, we were only asking those that attended the game to pay respects, not the whole country - so the gesture is weighted on the issue its aimed at.

We toast to a married couple, we celebrate famous battles, we celebrate the resurrection of a guy 2000 years ago, why can't a club pay tribute to a genuinely good guy who was voted POTS who unfortunately had his career destroyed, leaving him with very little in terms of opportunities. He has gone from giving a family the best of starts in the world to a world of obstacles.

His share of the POTS vote was 80%, IIRC he never got to finish the following season.

That's tragic.

Better a baby boomer who questions the fact that there seems to be an over sentimentalisation rife in the world then from someone who seems happy to label millions of people as "disgusting " and "vile" just because of their date of birth.

I'd be even more worried if the "too good for us" kids, that incidentally we "baby boomers " brought up, decided to use your values as an example of how to behave.
