our winning the league was aided by inconsistency with other Championship teams.

Isn't that how you win a league? I mean by consistently getting more points than all the other teams

andrew1957
handbags_harris Yet another pathetic, meaningless reactionary thread. Of course he hasn't lost the dressing room you utter f*cking bellend. AAgainst Bolton we absolutely annihilated them second half. Against Watford we annihilated them first half. Against Ipswich we dominated second half, Against Blackpool we dominated the game and lost due to a stupid passage of play. We're playing well in patches, last night will just go down in the annals of history as a bad night but to come out with this sh*t after one game where we fail to perform is just mindless, revisionist b*llocks. Why don't you f*cking c*nts just crawl back under your stones?

So rather than enter a debate you choose to be rude and use bad language. I find your attitude offensive and unnecessary. I realise that you may have only a few brain cells but being civil costs nothing. This is supposed to be a forum for debate but people like you just turn it into a toxic joke. No wonder so many nobbers give up posting when they are subjected to a torrent of abuse.

Post reactionary, deluded nonsense and there's no point entering into a debate.

You don't enter into a debate with someone who's talking nonsense, because it gives more weight to their nonsense. You point out they're wrong, add your flavour of disdain / abuse and hope they learn their bloody lesson.

You're so much better than this andrew. Stop being a knob.

Hi Ian

To be honest I was trying to provocative with the title of the thread - although the points I made I stand by.

What annoys me is the was Brian is now being derided by you and so many after all he achieved here. In his last 13 games in charge the record was 4-2-7 whereas Adkins has managed 2-4-7 in his first 13. His record is therefore considerably worse - even though several games have been at a lower level.

The double standards on here are breath-taking. When Guthrie refused to play it was Brian's fault and he had "lost the dressing room" (hence my title) whereas Adkins gets little blame for the Kebe situation. In my opinion Brian always set a team up to try to get a result and did what he had to do. The football was not always pretty but it was effective. I genuinely hope that Adkins can turn us into Barcelona but I fear that this attempt has little more chance of success than the Rodgers one - unless the owner suddenly finds a lot of money to spend - which looks ever more unlikely.

Overall I would have to say that the results under the Adkins regime have been disappointing so far. So as I said before in the thread, for me the jury is well and truly out.

Has he lost the dressing room? No.

Has he probably lost a few of the players confidence and backing? Yes, most managers do as they have to make decisions on players and they all want to play. What we saw on Tuesday night was a collection of the disaffected, thrown together after little preperation, against a team who were out to cause an upset and were in tip tip form.

andrew1957 ...but the reality is that players like Mariappa, HRK and ALF look a shadow of their former selves under McDermott

I'd take issue with this statement too. Le Fondre hasn't looked a shaddow of his former self under Adkins. He's look exactly as he did under McDermott, a good finisher but a player that doesn't quite do enough to command a starting place.

Robson-Kanu had his best and most effective spell as a Reading player under Adkins at the back of last season. McDermott never really got much out of him and he's reverted to type this season. He flatters to deceive but has some rare moments of quality, we're just waiting for those moments at right now.

Mariappa is an interesting one. McDermott paid good money for him, hardly played him to start with, then he was in and out of the side a bit before being widely regarded as one of our better defenders last season. Personally I think he was as poor as the other defenders but his pace got him out of trouble at times. I'm a little surprised he's been frozen out to the extent he has so far though.

andrew1957 Hi Ian

To be honest I was trying to provocative with the title of the thread - although the points I made I stand by.
Then you're an idiot.

andrew1957 What annoys me is the was Brian is now being derided by you and so many after all he achieved here. In his last 13 games in charge the record was 4-2-7 whereas Adkins has managed 2-4-7 in his first 13. His record is therefore considerably worse - even though several games have been at a lower level.

I have only derided Brian's failures. I fully appreciate his successes and wish him well. Please don't just make bullshit up. New manager picking up the shambolic pieces from pevious manager not having a good starting record shocker. We've had one bad performance and result this season, in a cup no one gives a shit about. Stop being such a whiney cretin.

andrew1957 The double standards on here are breath-taking. When Guthrie refused to play it was Brian's fault and he had "lost the dressing room" (hence my title) whereas Adkins gets little blame for the Kebe situation.

:| seriously :|
Guthrie was misused and frustrated by Brian. No one backed what he did, although they understood it. Still he was honest in what he did, then apologised, knuckled under and has since prospered. Kebe was not treated badly in anyway. He phoned into a radio station off his own back saying he was fit, knowing he'd been picked for a game and told why not another one. He then quite clearly dishonestly pulled a sickie to avoid putting his move in danger. If you can't see they're not at all similar. You're an idiot.

andrew1957 In my opinion Brian always set a team up to try to get a result and did what he had to do. The football was not always pretty but it was effective.
Halleluja, something that isn't total bollocks. Shame he got it totally wrong last year.

andrew1957 I genuinely hope that Adkins can turn us into Barcelona but I fear that this attempt has little more chance of success than the Rodgers one - unless the owner suddenly finds a lot of money to spend - which looks ever more unlikely.
And back to toss. I presume you have suffered some recent serious head trauma seeing as you seem to have lost a couple of dozen IQ points. Adkins is not trying to turn us into Barcelona, Adkins style is closer to Coppell's side than Rodgers. A step towards Rodgers / Barcelona from Coppell certainly, but not aiming at what they do. It's neat, and attacking, but has an emphasis on ball retention. Something we have dearly lacked for years.

andrew1957 Overall I would have to say that the results under the Adkins regime have been disappointing so far. So as I said before in the thread, for me the jury is well and truly out.
They've been alright. Try beig a rational human being and judging after 10 games of the new season when things mean something. Not being a stupid knee jerking plank because of one pathetic cup display. Because that's all it is. That's all that has gone seriously wrong so far. Something that doesn't matter in the slightest.

Tokyo Sex Whale Play direct football now > see results in the short term > maybe get promoted to prem > get relegated immediately.

Change style of football > see results in the long term > get promoted in 2/3 seasons > solidify ourselves as a 14th place prem team for the next 10 years.

Ugh.

andrew1957 It seems to me fairly obvious from the last couple of timid and gutless performances that the players are simply not yet buying in to the Adkins passing style.

The reality is that Reading have played the Coppell and more recently McDermott "Reading way" very effectively for many years and with great success. Now the style is being changed and there seems little appetite from the players to transform the "Reading way" into the beautiful game.

Now we know that Kebe is unhappy and who knows who else but the reality is that players like Mariappa, HRK and ALF look a shadow of their former selves under McDermott - who seemed to have the great knack of getting the best out of limited players. Judging by his start at Leeds - who have a vastly inferior squad compared to RFC in terms of quality - McDermott has not lost that ability.

I said when McDermott was sacked that it was a huge risk and it now seems that we are standing on the edge of the precipice. Will Nigel be able to win over the players and get them to adjust and become a strong cohesive unit or will we spiral down like Wolves? The jury is out.

And I do wonder about the owner. Cardiff (for example) have brought in players for fees far is excess of out still measly club record paid of £2.5M. There have supposedly been a few big bids lodged but clearly ones that were never going to be accepted (Ince and Sigurdsson). In many ways I like the club being run sensibly but if we are serious about making a sustained bid for promotion and staying in the PL then a few marquee signings will be needed. Is there really any money?

Your post is one of the many reasons why I detest visiting the Team board. It's full of tossers like you who post polished turds like this.

Where did you get the idea that Kebe is unhappy? :| I've not read any comments from him to that effect. If he's been unhappy then it's probably because he's unhappy with his fitness - hell, I know I'd be pissed off if I was injured and unable to play.

Can't be arsed to comment on the rest of your shitty post, it's that bad.

tmesis McGhee was also getting stick in his first few games. I remember people shouting out to him that he'd be the first sacking of the season during what looking like being our 5th winless match under him, until two very late goals turned the game.

The other difference is that the expectation was much lower (despite that early impatience). If Adkins came out and said that he was going to change the style of the team, but we probably wouldn't see the fruits of it until next year or the year after, would people be happy with that?

McGhee lost his first 6 games in charge (including a League Cup defeat to a team from East Anglia). He was player-manager for the first season and had more than one altercation with the (sparsely populated) Southbank in those early days. I think we finished about 13th with a pretty even split of wins, draws and losses.

It's worth pointing out that McGhee was at the end of him playing career and had no management or coaching experience. Adkins, of course, has shedloads and a good track record.

Im fairly sure that McGhee won his first game in charge which was a 1-0 win over stoke at the end of a season.

To be fair, if you'd listened to his call into BBCRBs last weekend you'd have heard him sounding unhappy with not being involved.
