Top 5 most hated ex-Royals - Sponsored by Big Foot

by Ian Royal » 25 Jan 2014 13:11

Inspired by Big Foot's hatred of Brian Howard over in GF, who are the five Royals players you hate the most / like the least? And lets keep it to ex-players so we don't have any nastiness about the current squad at this most interesting of times.

And add why you couldn't stand them.

1) Paul Brooker - I don't think I've ever felt so irate about a footballer, even opposition players, as I did about Brooker. Even now just thinking about him makes me want to spit vitriol, the useless streak of gutless yellow shite. Bottled every challenge, mis-placed passes left right and centre, rarely beat his man and generally served no oxf*rd purpose what-so-ever.

2) Paul Bodin - ex-Swindon. A left back so bad, that when he was sent off for something another Reading player did, no one complained. Not the fans, not the players and not the management.

3) Matt Mills - collossal arrogance, petulant and nasty streaks a mile wide. Set a terrible example as a captain and was prone to repeat and ridiculous mistakes. Not worth even close to half the fee we agreed for him. Made even more frustrating because if he hadn't been a total bellend he would have been good enough for the PL.

4) Ray Houghton - a player with a big record and therefore a big expectation for me at the time. His contribution was to take half a dozen touches too many every time he had the ball and be just generally shit in the middle of the park. Epitomised all that was wrong with Burns approach of fannying around cluelessly in the middle of the park.

5) Keith Jones - see Houghton but without the expectation.

But for seven wonder months, I think Long might have squeezed out Jones.

Honourable mentions to Van der Kwaak, Shepperd, Crawford and Holsgrove, who while probably shitter than half of that list, now they're long gone are more remembered with amused pity than dislike.

Does Roberts now count as an ex-player?

Nick Colgan. I often wonder if they would have been better off just putting a goalie shirt on a traffic cone rather than playing him. Couldn't have been any worse.

Hate is a bit strong isn't it?

You could look at almost every player signed by Tommy Burns. For me though, the players that got my goat especially were Michael Meaker and Paul Brayson.

Agree that hate is a bit strong but for me:-
Michael Meaker-we swapped one of our greats Simon Osborn (plus a bit of cash) for him.
David Leworthy
Craig Maskell
Ian Harte

I'm not sure about 'hate', but disliked, and just off the top of my head - and in no particular order:

1. Sheppard
2. Bodin
3. Scott
4. Gray
5. Coulgan

They are some of the worst players I have seen pull on a Reading shirt.

Hating ex players for nor being good enough is pretty lame. I don't really hate any ex Reading players, but if there were any Mills would be a contender for obvious reasons, but even 'legends' like Shorey & Sidwell, who I look back on fondly, could have handled themselves better when their option to leave Reading came up.

Shorey had achieved everything in his career as a result of Pardew plucking him from obscurity and giving him his break at a decent level. When the money came knocking after two years in the PL however, he unceremoniously turned his back on the club.

Then the Sidwell thing. I saw him at Windsor races just as his deal to go to Chelsea was going through, and despite the fact that Reading had a club record £25K a week on the table for him, his words to me were: 'I've got a young family to consider'. £1.3m a year not enough no?

Just for the record, apart from the very odd candidate, I'm in the camp that thinks hate is rather over the top.

Players that IMHO had flawed characters. Not necessarily a reflection on their footballing abilities.

Leroy Lita - Gangster twit.
Matt Mills - No need for an explanation.
Scott Murray - Really? Bristol is too far away from Reading? Man up.
Emerse Fae - Poisonous Frenchman.
Kebe - See Fae above.

Oh, I forgot David Crown .... Am I allowed 6?
No reflection on his character, just his crossing abilities into the Tilehurst End.

Mark Reilly - the worst Tommy Burns signing by a mile. My blood boiled watching him in a Reading shirt

Dishonourable mentions to Bodin and Brooker for reasons stated above and Michael O'Neill (ran like a girl as well as being useless)

Number 5 would be either Greg Halford or Matt Mills
