I sit at 58 on the average check. Allowing 10% and speedo errors never had anything through in the post, probably just luck though

We travelled up on Friday leaving at 1.30 and arrived at 6.15 including a 20 minute stop at Trowell services

West Stand Man It would be interesting to do a survey of drivers to see how many people understand how the cameras work. I watched a guy on the M4 today speeding well over the 50 limit and then slowing to about 50 for the camera.


Providing his average between the two cameras on any section was under 55mph he'd be fine, but the way your describing makes that sound unlikely.

I was always under the impression that's how they worked as apposed to just doing the limit at both cameras - which seems silly and little different from normal cameras.


Thats correct. They take the average speed between "live" cameras as there are numerous dummys within the works. When I was project manager on motorway schemes, I used to get printouts of the speed profiles of all cars driving past. Average speed was about 46mph with the highest speed recorded on my job of 71mph. Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) guidelines for prosecution used to be 50 +10%+2mph so 57mph average speed. May have changed though.

Yeah I've always worked on that too (speed limit + 10% + 2mph), but there is a tiny bit more leniency at higher speeds - you're never going to get done at 80 on a motorway for example.

Strangely, in contrast to those guidelines, i know people who have sworn that they got caught doing 34 in a 30.

They might have also been full of shit.

thanks for advice.
heard sum coaches setting off at 1 so people can book 1/2 day off work. to me its a bit late as we wont hit the motorway at that time be more like 1.30.
so leaving at 1 were guna hit reading affer 5 which as some stated is not ideal

A friend of my got stopped for speeding on his bike some years ago. Think he only got a warning rather than a charge though.

They work by measuring the time taken to drive between the cameras. It is a much better way of controlling traffic as it, largely, stops the mad dash and then panic braking just ahead of the cameras that the 'normal' speed cameras generate. It doesn't need to be the speed between 2 consecutive cameras, so if you are not picked up by one (because visibility is poor, you are hard up behind another vehicle etc) then another one can still get you. That is why lane swapping wasn't always a solution in the past!
