Most people still think "Reading FC" is some sort of book club

Think footballers are as articulate or not as the rest of the population* really. However, they're encouraged to stick to cliches when they do interviews with the press. So you're not going to hear them say much beyond platitudes on Sky Sports.

*tbf, that's probably a bit of a low bar, if some of the voxpops I've heard recently are anything to go by.

Some of the interviews the Tilehurst End for instance, have done, with ex-Reading players have been interesting.

Personally I think all U21 footballers should be studying/training for some thing other than football as well as football, as routine. Rather than it being fairly rare.

Agree about intellect and the cliches.

It's those like Harry Kane and Rooney that give the general bad name.

I find this especially true when foreign players talk who actually speak good English and are articulate.

To be honest, I don't think footballers are that inarticulate, they have any originality and free thinking media coached out of them. Even someone like Rooney, on the rare occasions I've seen him interviewed about something other than football, whilst not entirely comfortable, he's come across as fairly thoughtful and not in the least bit unintelligent.

Also, for all the articulate foreign footballers in the Premiership, we don't get to see the mumbling, inarticulate oafs being interviewed in the nether regions of La Liga, Bundesliga or Serie A each week.

It's only really interesting due to the amazing team we had then. Any other team or era and it wouldn't have interested me really

Christ - the Dave Edwards' book must be a hard sell for the publisher.

Don't doubt that he's a bright, articulate and thoroughly nice bloke, but not sure a career predominantly made up of spells at clubs such as Shrewsbury and Wolves can have the gravitas to shift more than a couple of thousand copies at most.

I know* that he's played a fair few times for Wales, but I wouldn't even buy Chris Gunters book and he's arguably had twice the career Dave Edwards has.

You'd be surprised - will be a popular enough Christmas gift in Wales I reckon. They definitely brought it out at the right time of year. And the marketing budget seems to consist of him arranging signing sessions in every football club he's ever played in, so not huge expenditure there. The co-author is the Media Manager at Wolves, so you'd imagine somebody who would know a bit about marketing.

I don't know the relative "respect" he'd have in Wales, or at Wolves, but I know plenty Irish people who'd buy a book written/ghost written by pretty much any Irish international, just because of who he is.

While on the subject, its been out a while, but Paul McGrath's biography is definitely worth a read. Probably a more interesting story to tell though!
