Got to be looked at in the context of transfer fees. So:

Craig Maskell. Record signing who was ok, but nowhere near as good as he should have been. And replaced Deano "Dean" Horrix I think so was always onto a loser.

Carl Asaba. Record signing. Wasn't terrible but he was no Jimmy Quinn.

Lee Nogan. Controversial? Record signing (I think?). Had a glorious 4 months than nearly took us to The Prem including several of the most memorable goals in our history. But, apart from that four months, he was pretty bog average.

Was Jim McIntyre a record signing? If so then he challenges Asaba and Aluko for worst value.

Mariappa was average with some good games mixed in. Ilori and McShane were as bad as each other but at least McShane had injuries as an excuse whereas Ilori was sloppy with terrible concentration.

I was a fan of Nogan and in having 2 little players up front we were ahead of our time .
Although they bought Nogan I think Jim and Mick panicked and brought in a player I never liked, Trevor Morley.

It meant a change of style from our successful passing game as we relied on long-ball and Morley diving to get free-kicks.

Fair comment. I thought we had paid more for Steve Moran but it was only around £200,000.
Nogan was on fire and looked a top class striker for those few months and the goal at Wembley was of a player at the very top of his game.
I do think Vic has a point about the playing style and the loss of Simon Osborn was huge.

I think our change and deterioration was more about the declining quality of player we could afford and trying to adapt our style to cope. When Morley could actually get on the pitch regularly he scored a boatload, which is almost certainly the reason we stayed up as long as we did. 22 goals wasn't it? And we replaced him with Asaba, who again was served badly and a different type of player. He simply wasn't a get on the end of a cross and nod it in kind of guy.

In 1994 Craig Maskell and Steve Moran were the equal record signings at £250,000, therefore Lee was the third player to equal that.

Jim McIntyre cost £420,000 I believe which, at the time, put him the third most expensive player behind Darren Caskey and Carl Asaba. As I recall Jim was a really good player under Alan Pardew but disappointing under Tommy Burns.

Jim was last known to be manager at Dundee (sacked May 2019) while Lee was last heard of as assistant manager to Neil Aspin at Port Vale (left January 2019).

For a moment there you had me going.I remember standing next to this old dear on the West Bank at Elm Park.She hated Asaba with a vengeance.Didnt he and John Mackie have a fight in the tunnel when Asaba was with Sheffield Utd ? Now John Mackie was a player.Apparently he got more money on his fruit and veg stall than he did playing for us.
