Lucas Joao, Puscas, Meite v Sarr, Toney and Pukki

by Snowball » 11 Apr 2021 12:39

I was curious how Joao's SEASONAL totals stack up against the big boys
and added Puscas and Meite for fun...

Columns are
Shots Shots/Game Goals Assists G/A Lethal Mins Mins/Goal Mins/GA Name

Minutes Played

First-off Joao has played a significant amount less
than Toney, Sarr and Pukki Toney has played 20%
more minutes (4), Sarr 13% (2.5), Pukki 11% (2)

Numbers in brackets are estimates of extra goals Joao would have had

113 2.9 29 10 39 3.90 3,362 116 086 Toney
079 2.2 12 04 16 6.60 3,194 266 200 Sarr
126 3.4 25 03 28 5.03 3,132 125 112 Pukki
085 2.3 22 07 29 3.87 2,907 132 100 Joao All
081 2.3 19 07 26 4.24 2,825 149 109 Joao Lge <<<<<<
053 2.4 09 01 10 5.87 1,346 150 135 Meite All
020 1.1 06 00 06 3.33 0,728 121 121 Puscas

Shots per Game

(Second Column)

Pukki and Toney play for free-scoring teams and take a pot
a lot more than Joao. Joao does other stuff well (eg 7 Assists)
but as you can see later he is reasonably lethal scoring about 1 in 4 shots

126 3.4 25 03 28 5.03 3,132 125 112 Pukki
113 2.9 29 10 39 3.90 3,362 116 086 Toney
053 2.4 09 01 10 5.87 1,346 150 135 Meite All
085 2.3 22 07 29 3.87 2,907 132 100 Joao All
081 2.3 19 07 26 4.24 2,825 149 109 Joao Lge
079 2.2 12 04 16 6.60 3,194 266 200 Sarr
020 1.1 06 00 06 3.33 0,728 121 121 Puscas

Shots per Goal

This surprised me. I often see Puscas as "not looking dangerous" and
I guess that's because he doesn't shoot enough (1.1 v Pukki's 3.4)

He scores 3 goals every 10 shots. That is more lethal than the top boys.

But Joao comes in second, beating Toney for shots needed per goal.

020 06 00 06 3.33 0,728 121 121 Puscas
085 22 07 29 3.87 2,907 132 100 Joao All
113 29 10 39 3.90 3,362 116 086 Toney
081 19 07 26 4.24 2,825 149 109 Joao Lge
126 25 03 28 5.03 3,132 125 112 Pukki
053 09 01 10 5.87 1,346 150 135 Meite All
079 12 04 16 6.60 3,194 266 200 Sarr

Minutes per Goal

It's not surprising that Toney heads the field and he must be worth 40-50 Million
on these figures. A goal every 116 minutes is excellent.

But look where Puscas is, just behind on 121 and ahead of Pukki, and Joao's
132 (all) 149 (Lge) is also very, very good (including his barren period)

Meite's 150 is also healthy, streets in front of Sarr

113 29 10 39 3.90 3,362 116 086 Toney
020 06 00 06 3.33 0,728 121 121 Puscas
126 25 03 28 5.03 3,132 125 112 Pukki
085 22 07 29 3.87 2,907 132 100 Joao All
081 19 07 26 4.24 2,825 149 109 Joao Lge
053 09 01 10 5.87 1,346 150 135 Meite All
079 12 04 16 6.60 3,194 266 200 Sarr

Minutes per Goal or Assist

I was hoping to see Joao at the top of this list with his seven assists but 50M Tony has had 10!

Toney gets a goal or an assist every 86 minutes
one or the other per game

Joao (All Games) is on 100, extremely good numbers,
that's almost a goal or assist per game

Joao (Lge Games) is 109. VERY good, beating Pukki and Puscas

40 Million Pound Sarr gets a goal or an assist every 200 Minutes

113 29 10 39 3.90 3,362 116 086 Toney
085 22 07 29 3.87 2,907 132 100 Joao All
081 19 07 26 4.24 2,825 149 109 Joao Lge
126 25 03 28 5.03 3,132 125 112 Pukki
020 06 00 06 3.33 0,728 121 121 Puscas
053 09 01 10 5.87 1,346 150 135 Meite All
079 12 04 16 6.60 3,194 266 200 Sarr

Two conclusions for me.

Joao, despite his manner and his current poor spell, is better than I thought

Puscas should be playing, especially ATM. And get him to shoot more!

Sounds about right. Maybe even play them together!

What shape, though?

4-4-2, who do you drop, Meite?

4-3-3 with Puscas and Meite wide forwards, drop one of the DMs or Ejaria?

Could Joao play slightly deeper like a 10? When on form he has great control.

Perhaps he needs to be played in a way that he can relax more, not feel he
is the only goal-scorer.

Who'd be a manager?

Yes probably Yaks has to make way. Bring him on for impact. Either way Puscas deserves to start.

Do the stats factor in penalties ? Worked assuming all goals are open play must skew the stats a bit ?

Goals are goals IMO

We’ve seen that not every penalty goes in.

Does Pukki take pens? Toney?

Who does Pauno build the team around Joao or Puscas? Very different players. I'd prefer Puscas to be the focal point. Needs service from the flanks to be effective though. With Meite and Ejaria ain't going to happen though.

I believe Toney and Pukki take pens.
Obviously in terms of totals it’s traditional that it’s how many times you hit the back of the net that count, not how you get them.
If you are trying to compare performance of strikers though I think mixing two totally different things makes the stats rather questionable. Pens give some strikers an easy way to boost their totals.

It's a quick comparison, not definitive, Nameless.

As 3/4 of them take penalties, I doubt it matters all that much.

Joao's figures hold up very, very well, even when we factor in his bad games

Only Toney is a truly stand-out player, and that (partly) is due to the way Brentford play

Found penalty Stats

29 (8) = 21 Toney
25 (5) = 20 Pukki
19 (4) = 15 JOAO

remember Toney has played 21% more minutes

Agree with that. On Pukki, I often feel he is overrated and with a decent supply...without Buendia, he would struggle.
Norwich fans bang on about him like he's Lewandowski, and it's true he had a decent patch in the premier League, but vanished for two thirds of the season.
Toney though is a handful and has way more attributes.

Could someone make video footage of all of Joao's penalty misses and easy chance misses from this season. Starting with the easy chance missed away at Coventry. It would make fantastic/funny viewing. I would be happy to pay for the privilege of watching.
